Yeah, you're probably right. Mine was a 'virgin' version of Fedora Core 3, no updates or anything. Mine probably just had an old KDM.

Oops! Yeah, I have a 2Mb ADSL connection.
Sorry, maybe I should have made that clear in my post.

Does it matter that it only says "1 reply"? If I'm interested in a comment that's been made and want to know if there are any new replies, my email lets me know, as it did today on a topic, which is how I ended up reading this thread out of curiosity. I have NEVER yet read the "1 reply" part of the threads, I don't even notice it. I just read through the threads that interest me and expand them if I wish to see if there are any replies. Simple.

I don't see the point in taking the time to post numerous messages complaining about how a board works (or doesn't work) and get annoyed with a minor, periphary part of the website when you could be using that time more constructively by learning new things about KDE and Linux, posting constructive comments and maybe even creating something to contribute to the website.
Life is too short to complain about a minor part of the backend of a website. I understand that you may be a little frustrated but you shouldn't let it get you down. Just ignore it, use some other method to determine whether there are new replies to a topic, and use your unwasted time to do something fun/useful.

I hope I haven't offended you as that wasn't my intention, but life's to short to complain about something so small and it does nobody any good to have to wade through loads of "new replies" that are just complaints about nothing.

Adam.

Only KDE 3.4 supports themes in KDM. Anything lower and themes will just not work and (in my case anyway) could 'break' your KDM.

My suggestion is that you do what I did and update KDE to KDE 3.4. All the files take up approximately 80Mb and the update only takes about 40mins.

Read the information at: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/archive/index.php/t-48031.html for more information (specifically, the stuff nearer the bottom of the page).

Upgrade KDE and you won't regret it! KDE 3.4 is faster, sleeker, shinier, more extensible and is packed full of features. It is the easiest way to ensure that your KDM is themeable, and it makes your whole desktop look great.

Good Luck.

What I meant by "I can't remove the theme" is I can't find where it was installed to (I checked all the obvious places that everyone mentions for KDM themes) and I couldn't find references to it in the kdmrc file (my kdmrc file is considerably smaller than the one off the official KDE website, and yes, it is the ONLY kdmrc file so I haven't mistaken it for soemthing else).

Thanks for your ideas and help though goldenboy because they inspired me to try something that turned out to be a great solution.

I've solved the problem of the busted KDM interface by... using the yum command to upgrade KDE following the instructions at the bottom of the page on http://forums.fedoraforum.org/archive/index.php/t-48031.html

Now I'm running KDE 3.4.1 which is absolutely fantastic. It's sleeker, shinier and more feature packed than KDE 3.3, and most suprisingly, it's faster too. I'm extremely impressed and I'm glad I took the time to download it.

Ironically, when I rebooted after upgrading KDE, the login screen was the theme that I'd installed causing 3.3 to break. Hehe. Very good KDM theme though, A+ design.

So, the moral of the story, always read the label before you do something stupid, and always upgrade your Window Manager because it's well worth the effort.

I agree completely. He is offering the fonts free as well as a "pay service" for a more convenient method of obtaining them. There is nothing wrong with that at all, many Linux vendors do the same. He isn't breaking the GPL as, just like Richard Stallman said, "Don't confuse free software with free beer". Free in the GPL sense of the word doesn't mean "without cost" it means "freedom from limitations".

Sorry if it sounds like I'm preaching to the converted or telling you all what you already know but I don't like people using flawed arguments to mock or bash other peoples work.

BTW- The fonts are great and are well worth downloading. Now my OpenOffice.org documents look less sparse and boring. Thanks.

Re: Re: Re: KDM theme
Jun 14 2005  on Discussion

I installed a kdm theme that was for kde 3.4 on kde 3.3 and it has broken kdm. When I boot up it gets to the login, but the screen is all black except for a message box that says something like "Invalid theme, no username/password areas defined" and all it has is an ok button. When you click the ok button, nothing happens, it just stays there. I can't get into kde at all.

I can get into command line mode using the rescue cd (I use Fedora 3 with KDE 3.3), but I'm can't remove the theme. I've checked the kdmrc file but there is no obvious reference to the theme there. Any help, tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated as my laptop is almost useless unless I can get KDE working again.

Broke KDM on KDE3.3
Jun 14 2005  on content BlueTheme KDM Theme

I (idiotically) installed this KDM theme without checking which version of KDE it was for. Now whenever I startup my laptop (Fedora Core 3 with KDE3.3), when it gets to the login screen it just stays black with a message box in the centre saying something like "Cannot use theme file, no username/password input areas defined" or something like that. I click "Ok" on the box (it's the only button) but nothing happens!!! I've rebooted a number of times, looked at my /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc file and I can't find any reference to the theme so I can't restore the default settings.
The only way I can get into my laptop is using the recovery disk and the command line, no KDE!

Please could somebody tell me how to restore the original login screen so I can get back onto my laptop using KDE. Any help, advice or even ideas would be very greatly appreciated.
