Re: These fonts???
Feb 19 2005  on Discussion

It looks like the standard Mac fonts. I don't believe you can legally get them unless you own a Mac. Not sure about that last part, though.

Re: "Fanboy stuff"?
Feb 1 2005  on Discussion

Well, on a certain level, I agree with you in principle. However, practically I have to say that I don't see the negative things you mention happening unless KDE (and, therefore, *nix) suddenly explodes in popularity. And anyway, as of this moment, there are 313 fanboys who wanted the first one and 23 who wanted the second one. However ephemeral in popularity they might be, they pleased a total of 336 (as of this moment, anyway) people between them and I have to admit, there are worse.

sad truth
Dec 17 2004  on poll Why does KDE lack support from companies?

The truth is sad but should not be ignored. Marketing is the whole issue.

There are a lot of thoughtful ideas in the replies to this poll, whether I agree with them or not, and there are nuggets of truth that should be considered, but do not underestimate marketing. That is the very reason Microsoft is where it is today. Just for instance, was Windows 3.0 superior in any way whatsoever to OS/2 when Microsoft abandoned the latter for the former? Absolutely not. Neither was 3.1. For that matter, Windows 95, 98 and even NT (up to 4.0) were still inferior to OS/2, but by that time, how many people even knew about the better platform?

I always find myself going back to the example of OS/2 because I was a dedicated user of that OS myself and prefer not to see history repeat itself with my new platform of choice, however unlikely that is. I'm not trying to say that Gnome is inferior to KDE, however, they have people dedicated to keeping "Gnome" at the tips of people's tongues and fresh in their minds in association with the Linux desktop.

With proper marketing, Trolltech could possibly charge even more for commercial use of their toolkit and it wouldn't matter as long as people associated the "exciting" and "[insert marketing buzz word here]" KDE with the Linux desktop. (Though perhaps pricing based on scope would work out better for them and developers in the long run, anyway.)

Anyway, those are my thoughts.

the "other"
Nov 23 2004  on poll Funniest TV Cartoon Series:

First of all, the best cartoons of all time, period, were made before the Hayes Act and were generally shown in theatres rather than the yet-to-be-invented television.

But for television only, Ralph Bakshi's Mighty Mouse run was the funniest.

Wow
Mar 7 2004  on content NEWstep

This is awesome! I've always taken a perverse liking to the WINGz widgets and I wished (while I was still using WindowMaker) that I had more programs that looked like it. This is wonderful. I don't use WindowMaker much anymore, but I might use this from time to time, anyway.

And ya know, thinking of the WindowMaker config app I wonder... is there a way to make a style that does away with scrollbar buttons altogether? Between using the bar itself and the mousewheel, I never use them any more - except where the space is too small to allow for either.

In any case, thanks. If I ever learn how to do these myself, I'll make an OS/2 style and I'll be set.
