On desktop you will be able to install the package to enable the global menu on the desktop, but it will not be default. The only reason they are doing this is to allow another 32px-48px of vertical space, which for a netbook is alot. |
| ![.](/img/trans.gif) | | Re: Re: *unrelated* Jun 8 2010 on group | I actually prefer having the buttons on the left hand side. You can always change them to the right and change the order using gconf-editor. But the reason they changed sides wasn't to copy mac, but to open up the right hand side of the window to add more buttons. (Window indicators) Many people are complaining about indicators in the windows, but I think it is a good idea.
And in terms of the global menu, it is not being made for the desktop but for the netbook edition. You will be able to enable it on the desktop if you want, but they are adding the feature to save vertical space for the netbook edition. Which once again makes sense. Lastly, the theme looks way better than the Human theme.
Not saying that these things are perfect, but they aren't as bad as people make them out to be. |

Just let me know what to base it off of, your color palette and the general feel you are going for. Also any icon themes similar to what you want would be helpful as well. |

I have heard that jolicloud has a driver built in and has good performance. I haven't tried it but it might be worth a shot.
Besides that I hear that GMA500 sucks on linux.
Best of luck to you. |
| ![.](/img/trans.gif) | | Re: Re: Re: @tw1ggz Apr 29 2010 on group | I also have never liked the Human theme. I have used Humanity, Dust, New Wave, and Elementary. Nothing is perfect, but it does the job great for me.
I wasn't a huge fan of Karmic, but Lucid is running smoothly. Still not perfect, but meets my needs. |
| ![.](/img/trans.gif) | | Re: Re: @tw1ggz Apr 29 2010 on group | In my last post:
I'm not saying its perfect or it is the best, but I need everything to be automated.
So I admitted that there are bugs, but nothing that can compare to issues I had using Windows. |
| ![.](/img/trans.gif) | | @tw1ggz Apr 29 2010 on group | Not trying to bash you or anything, but why arguing that Ubuntu is garbage? I agree with the fact that there are WAY too many people that think that it is the only way and that Windows sucks just because Ubuntu is free. But honestly, nobody is asking you to think it is the best distro.
For me, I don't have time to have an OS that crashes, has to be fiddled with, or cost a lot of money. I need a consistent OS that is free, runs smoothly, fast, gets the job done right, no viruses, good support, etc. While I need those, I don't mind a good looking desktop at the same time. Ubuntu has so far done all of these OOTB for me.
I'm not saying its perfect or it is the best, but I need everything to be automated. Using cloud storage and nice themes that are included by default is definitely a bonus for me.
Also, there are people that use Ubuntu because they are not that computer smart. If a Windows user comes to me and wants something to use that will work without issues, I recommend Ubuntu for the sole purpose that everything is easy, automatic, and has GREAT support. So in terms of people with low IQs I can agree with that =P. I also agree that those people shouldn't say that it is the "Magical OS", but not everyone is like that.
In closing (@ everyone), everyone uses what they like or what they need, if they don't use what you don't that is perfectly okay. Open source should be a good place to be, not coming to a page with people flaming each other. (Even though it is fun to read, and some good points are made) |
| ![.](/img/trans.gif) | | Linux Awareness Dec 28 2009 on group | I can't speak for other areas, but in Ontario, Canada I have noticed that Apple has grown in popularity mainly because of the iPod. After the iPod became popular, people started to buy Macs and using OSX.
The sad part, is that they switch because "no viruses, no BSOD, etc." and Linux has the same benefits that they bring up, except for the price tag. Instead of trying Linux before hand by installing it on their PC's, they go out and buy a Mac.
I think the main factor why people go from Windows to OSX, is because of two things. Either people think Windows and OSX are the only two OS's available, or they know Linux exists, but think it is too difficult for the average user. This CAN be true, but there are distro's available that do not require any type of computer skills to use.
Ubuntu as an example, Since my grandparents made the switch from XP to Ubuntu without a hitch, and they use the computer for more than just web browsing: photo editing, simple video editing, etc.
It would be a good idea for there to be a site that would ask a series of questions as to the expectations of users that want to switch away from Windows and suggest a few distro's for them to try. There should then be ads to promote Linux so people know there is a FREE alternative that is not above their heads.
In my personal experience, I knew that Linux was around, but just thought it was more for the server side. I then did some research and found that Linux was a great alternative to Windows and I gave it a try and now love Linux. If I can be unaware like that, I'm positive that others can make that mistake.
I think everyone should give Linux a chance before switching to Mac (or just switch because Linux is MUCH better), but they need to use a distro that meets their needs and skill level.
Just my two cents. |
