It looks to me as though you named your ugliest wallpaper after Israel. Clearly you must be anti-Semitic! ;)

Seriously, though, it's RED and GREEN. They're opposites on the color wheel. They were probably used in this visualization exactly because they contrasted so much. Unsurprisingly, they do not look good together.

Re: XXX related content?
Aug 29 2006  on Discussion

Perhaps all the really nasty pictures have been rated below 20% in the time since you posted so that I can't see them. But looking right now, all of the "racy" pictures I see are pictures of fully dressed women who happen to be wearing tight pants and short dresses. There is no actual nudity, or really even the implication of nudity (Okay fine, there's one shot of Angelina Jolie in a bra -- whoop dee doo). All of those, even the bra picture, are PG rated pictures, not XXX rated. They're Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition pictures, not Playboy pictures.

Therefore, I conclude that one or both of these two things is happening here:

One, the rating system works and the really nasty stuff (e.g. actual XXX pictures) has been modded into oblivion. In that case, good, the rating system works.

Two, you're exaggerating (read: lying) to make your point, e.g. by calling pictures of women in bikinis "XXX rated" when any idiot knows better.

Personally, this whole argument strikes me as kind of silly. I have to say that I have seen racier ads than that on legitimate websites. The Internet in general really isn't for people who want a controlled environment.

It's like wanting a pool that you can swim in but not drown in. If there's water in it, either you can drown or it's a really shallow, fake kiddie pool (AOL?). They just go together.

Likewise, when you go on the Internet, you're choosing to deal with people who don't think like you. That's not something which can be eliminated... it's the basic nature of the thing, at least for community-centric, democratic websites like this one. If you just want safe G-rated wallpapers you can have that. Go to disney.com or some other site which is there to create a particular type of safe environment. But if you want to see the wallpaper which other random people have contributed, you get to see it all with only those same other random peoples' ratings to help guide you. That's what this site is, and if that's what people want then they should be allowed to do that. Yes, even if it's not kid friendly (as if the rest of the Internet were -- kids need to be supervised on the Internet), and yes, even if it's "in public" (again, this is PG stuff, like swearing in public, not XXX stuff).

Oh gawd, another one of those requests. ;) Personally, I think he should do it ONLY IF you can ask him again without using any of the letters in the name "EmZed".

Nov 9 2005  on content Soldier View

I think the last picture _could_ be interpreted as making a "V for Victory" in the sand. That's probably the bit which was interpreted as patriotic... but only because the submitter told us the backstory of the photos.

Here's an thought. If the submitter really thinks that these pictures stand on their own aesthetic qualities, perhaps putting them together and mentioning where they came from is a bad idea? Why would you have to tell people "don't think about them like this"? The third one, and arguably the first one as well, are hard to read into too much without the backstory, especially when viewed individually.

How about 1280x800?
Aug 14 2005  on content snakewall

Considering that much of this image is border, it might work well at 1280x800, and there just aren't enough of those. How about an official widescreen-laptop-sized version?

Choice of Style
Aug 6 2005  on content Stormy Field

Since posting this color scheme, it has come to my attention that it looks quite a bit better when using some Styles than others. Both Keramik and Mandrake/Mandriva's default style look bad since they make the toolbars dark grey. They're supposed to be light grey, as they are in Active Heart, Plastik and its variants, and Thin Keramik Mod (not sure about the original Thin Keramik). In the screenshot, I'm using the Active Heart Style.

About the future
Feb 22 2005  on content witness the future

If the future is that color, I'm right out. Somebody kill me now!

Seriously, good work with the lettering and all, but I can't imagine looking at something that intensely orange all day. How about a nice pale green or blue instead, or a BSD Daemon scarlet?

Then again, maybe there's a way to take advantage of that intense coloring. How about a background where the background color is also a CPU temperature meter?

Re: beta
Dec 9 2004  on content GL-Win-Deco - 0.5 - Mandrake 10.1 rpms

I've got it running on my laptop. It's a Medion 41017, with an Athlon 2200+, 512MB RAM (but 32 of that taken by UMA video) and using the built-in Savage DDR video (about TNT2-M64 speeds). I'm using x.org 6.8.1 on Mandrake 10.1, and direct rendering is enabled and working. Resolution is 1024x768x24bpp.

It works fine. It doesn't slow things down too much. I get about 5% CPU usage when my mouse is over a titlebar (the rest of the time the images in the titlebar are stable).

The main problem is that the cursor goes "under" the window decoration, so it's hard to tell sometimes whether you're moving or resizing a window. I'm using a custom cursor (RevRedux2) which could be part of the problem. Other than that, the only problem is that it's a very ugly win deco. :)
