Have Celeron400/256Mb RAM/slow swap/i740/FreeBSD-5.4 but Xorg6.8.2+Qt.3.3.4+KDE3.4 compiled from ports w/ -march=pentium2 -O3 @gcc3.4.2 (as the whole system is). Even w/ transparency effects & Crystal-GL windeco it runs smoothly. While Fedora users @faster machines complain much about KDE performance. Distributors should use more aggressive optimisations & provide system-oriented binaries (e.g. separate for P2, P3, P4, etc.) IMHO |

The problem i've got slow enough machine, kdelibs would build there in ~8h (guess the time to compile base+pim), but I need the box up w/ kde environment running every day. |

I've got P2-compartible CPU (e.g. MMX is the only extension), but configure set MMX2 & SSE for me. Seems ./configure is relying on the fact SSE (or whatever) instructions can be assembled white it's wiser to run the code & check if it has coredumped |
