| re connects May 7 2004 on content Apollon | The bug link seems to have gone.BUT.
If for some reason apollon has to reconnect to several networks and there are downloads pending on more than one network the connects don't allways work out. Also if downdloading from more than one network at the same time Apollon sometimes looses one of the network connections. This can be checked by doing a search - results will only be seen from one network. The same search following a re connect will produce results from both networks. I try to connect to all 3 but openFT never connects.
All said I like this program but the conection loss issue is a bit sad. |
| ![.](/img/trans.gif) | | Software Apr 24 2004 on poll Your opinion about software patents? | Please excuse my spelling.
I have been writing software for a long time and came to the conclusion a long time ago that in real terms almost nothing is really new. Everything that I am aware of is in most cases nothing more than a blatent restatement of old ideas. I would go as far as to say that the challenge for most companies that are active in this area is just how to state there ideas in a fashion that makes them patentable or how to accomplish their aims in a manner that may be patentable. As I have also been very active in patents in the physical product area I can also state that little regard seems to be placed on prior art these days. While I can see that there are clear commerecial advatages to things drifting in that direction it definately does favour major players which is one of the things that can and has resulted in virtual monopoly situations. As far as I am aware all countries world wide recognise in law that this is not a good idea.
I work in the automotive area. Here copy right laws have been used to prevent pure software theft. That does make a lot more sense. The problem in respect to PC's is that allmost all software will have to bend to Microsoft in some respect. As an example of this the Linux browser I am using to write this must by necessity follow any lead Microsoft may set. They will also to a lesser extent have to follow any lead this one manages to add. Lets hope that no one comes up with a patent that interferes with this.
There are other issues in this area. As an example this machine has a variaty of codecs on it which I have paid for or obtained legally but I can't use them under Linux. I'm glad to say that I can open "MY" Ms Word documents with Open Office. Just as I could open an Amipro etc document with Word but it gets worse. I may want to upgrade. I will have to re install Linux if I install XP. This is my machine - I paid for it. I should be able to do just what ever I like with it so why should I have to put up with this? If I install XP as suplied my machine is quite likely to be seriously infected befor I can even get to the Microsoft update site. It often takes less than 12secs. Just why is a company allowed to sell a product like this. The answear is simple - they have a virtual monoply. This is right on the verge of legality. Sofware patents in Europe can only make this situation worse. I could say a lot more in this general area but I'm climbing on to my soap box so I must close. The whole area anoys me. |
| ![.](/img/trans.gif) | | One problem Apr 19 2004 on content Apollon | I have all 3 of the available protocols running. The selection order is FastTrack, Gnutella and OpenFT. The 1st 2 are ok but OpenFT just shows connecting. I'm also having problems on FastTrack. Files are shown a queued but often don't get downloaded. This is what often happens on Kazaa though.
Tip: Hiting 'search for more' immediately after a search has finished often gives more results. |

| ![.](/img/trans.gif) | | Run As Root etc. Apr 10 2004 on content "Run As Root" for Service Menus | As a newcomer to linux and unix I have found this very useful especially for installations and nosing arround. There is only one change I would like to see and that is the ability to open as root in the console. Also a suse installation update seems to have just removed it. drat. It really does help. I can soon but it back again but just how do I stop this from happening? It aught to be part of the base kde package. |
| ![.](/img/trans.gif) | | Installation Apr 10 2004 on content Apollon | I've now got Apollon up and running. It's a great piece of work.
The main problems with installation were related to loaded packages. A readme giving this info would have been extremely useful. I recieved excellent support from the Apollon team and had to run giftd the installer at the command promt.
The other problem I had related to the giFT package. On startup it copies the protocols to a hidden gift directory on the user desktop that contains one folder for each protocol. I had to create these manually. Also it expects to find the .so files etc in usr/share..... folder. These were empty but a file search soon fould them and I copied them across manualy. I run suse9 prof.
On improvements: I think timeouts, acceptable queue lengths and scan for new sources timing etc should be made available to the user. A search for more after the search has just timed out often reveals a lot more sources. This isn't unusual on other peer to peer packages. I'm not sure why. The ability to edit the hostile ip address list might also be useful but I expect these keep changing in anycase. |
