Btw... the actual use of the desktop is to have a clean desk on which you can place really important or really useful things like some knotes, some karamba-themes (rss, calendar, clock, whatever) and Icons to applications which you're using very often.
It is (here on my machine) a clean place where I can relax and where I can think about my life and what I can do to make my desktop look even more better than at this moment.

It really is not and should never be a bloated, overloaded and confusing thing, full of work and remembering things what I still have to do and should not forget.

But hey... everyone should have the desktop which he wants. And exactly this is the reason why the desktop should *never* be the ~ directly.

Where's the problem to create symlinks to your video-, music-, downloads-, and whatever-folder in your ~/Desktop directory?
Why should the kde-team dictate how we have to use our desktop? Why should they bind us to the home-directory for our desktop where all the directories and files lays, which I've downloaded or on which I'm working on?? Why the hell should they suppose that every single user is able to keep his home-directory clean and lightweight enough to not get crazy about his overloaded and exploding desktop??

Why shouldn't they better give us the possibility to do which our desktop what we want (ie create symlinks in the subfolder ~/Desktop or whatever)???

Where is the sense behind your wish? I really doesn't see one single point which could be a reason for such curious wish.

This really needs arguments? I thought, the wish was so senseless, that it doesn't need any more commentations. But well...

I really don't want to have a totally overloaded desktop with an absolutly confusing number of files and directories on it.
My desktop has to be clear and lightweight, not overloaded with Icons.

The Desktop has to be a subdirectory of ~ as it is now and as it will ever, ever be.

Joke!

You must be joking! That really can't be serious! rofl...
No, not really...
