| ![.](/img/trans.gif) | | This is ridiculous Sep 5 2006 on content I and my body | I love KDE, and I come here looking for art and eye candy for my desktop. Most of the time, I get great stuff. But more and more, I start to run into this kind of content.
This item should NOT be in plain view from the content browser. There ARE kids who go to this site. How do I know? I think you can figure that one out. I do not view pornography regularly, and I find it extremely inconsiderate to post "adult content" on a site like this. Whether it is art or not is another question. My complaint is that this stuff is being thrown around kde-look for people like me to stumble upon. I recognize your freedom of speech, but this is a community that you need to be respectful of. There may some day be a designated area for adult content on this site, but while there isn't, keep this stuff on the pornography sites. |
| ![.](/img/trans.gif) | | Sort of impractical Mar 31 2006 on content Export Linux Apps 2 Flash 4 Windows | It would not be very useful to have a graphical tool for exporting your bookmarks to your flash/pen drive installation of some of the Portable Apps. More information would be required to run the program than to just export from Konqueror, etc. and move the files onto the device. You would have to tell the program exactly where the PortableApps "data" directory is stored, which apps you have installed, and a new version of the interface would have to come out every time a new Portable App came out. It would also make it annoying to move the installation to another directory, which basically defeats the whole purpose of "Portable Apps". |
| ![.](/img/trans.gif) | | Re: K vs X Mar 21 2006 on Discussion | Sorry, a K server would not be possible. KDE on Linux-like OSes uses QT for various things, including onscreen widgets. QT runs on the X server (usually XFree86 or Xorg). Furthermore, KDE and Xservers are for completely different purposes.
Xserver is a huge thing — it is what allows your computer to communicate with your monitor and create an onscreen display. It also sets up basic classes for putting different windows, shapes, etc. onto the screen. It also has drivers for your mouse, keyboard, graphics card, and maybe even more.
KDE, once an Xserver is up, uses that to run graphical applications. It is extremely flexible, configurable, and (I daresay) pretty with almost any theme out there, but it takes in all its events through the Xserver. KDE almost never interacts directly with your hardware - that is usually the job of either the kernel or the Xserver.
To make one huge Kserver, you would be doing two things: one, rewriting an Xserver (which would probably be bloated and not as good as the standalone one) for basic hardware connectivity, and two, limiting the freedom of users. Although I like KDE and I think most people would be best off using it, users should have the choice which desktop environment to use. If you made a Kserver, other programs would be unable to use its monitor connectivity to make other graphical apps. The mainstream for free software OSes is to, for each functionality programmed, make a library of it, and then possibly a graphical interface to use that library — that way, other programs can easily use your library to do the same task within their purposes (for example, tons of programs use libpng to display and edit png images). KDE even provides countless libraries for functionality provided by KDE apps. Functionality should not be tailored toward one app.
(P.S. what I would really love, is if Apple released a libipod, documented and compatible with all iPod models :D) |
