you should also try out blender, it's rather easy to do translucency and reflections in it. great for modeling too.

personally, i prefer a dark background so it's easy on the eyes. great for those long hours. BSD licence for images... i'm not sure. i guess you're free to distibute and sublicense, as long as i get proper credit :) |

It's nice, but i think you should add some fresnel to the ball's translucency to make it look more realistic. the water is great; did you make it yourself?
also: have you ever tried blender [blender3d.org]? |

I have one in gold, but it's a little different. I'll post it as soon as my finals are over :)

I was just wondering: what program did you use to create this?
i find your wallpaper rather interesting, but the two meta-balls in the center could use some texturing, eg shiny, bump map, etc. |
