Re: This WAS great
Oct 28 2006  on content KDE Kontact

I think I now have the same question you have: does anyone support this?

Maybe this is not the forum to ask about problems -- but wouldn't someone at least tell us where to go for that? I'd think it would matter that there are serious issues on some systems, but this looks more like an announcement page and the forum is just for looks.

If anyone can tell us where to go to actually get help with Kontact, it would be appreciated!

Freezing Up
Oct 18 2006  on content KDE Kontact

I had an earlier version of Kontact and had trouble with it freezing up when it retrieved email and sent it through spam filters. I'm now using Kontact in Kubuntu Dapper (whatever version # Dapper Drake is). I've used KMail, then Kontact ever since I switched to Linux, back around 2000, but now it is becoming unusable. It seems to freeze longer and longer when filtering spam. If I'm writing an e-mail, I can often type 5 lines while it is frozen and when it unfreezes, I finally see what I've been typing.

Often I tab over, while I've got a project compiling, to check e-mail, and the Kontact window is literally blank because it is frozen while retrieving email and filtering it. Lately, for some resaon, I've also seen it freeze for a second or two, then return to normal.

Right now I'm ripping a CD with KAudioCreator, and Kontact was frozen when I opened the tab in my browser and has stayed frozen while I searched to find this page, then log in, then write this entire message (otherwise I'd specify what version I'm using, but I can't get the version because it's been frozen for over 3 minutes now).

Has this issue been looked at? Why can't the filtering be done as a separate thread? I've got a computer with 2 Gig of memory and a fast chip. Why can't Kontact handle this without freezing up? Is there anything I can do to take care of this?

As it is, it seems to be getting worse, which could be my imagination, but this kind of activity is so frustrating I'm close to calling it unusable in a professional environment and switching to something else. I'm not threatening, but I hate to see an app that's been great for me having problems like this.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Switching Panes
May 4 2005  on content Kate

When I use Kate, I have a file list, edit pane, and console open. Is there a keyboard shortcut to switch from the edit window to the console, and from the console back to the edit window, or do I always have to use a mouse click to move back and forth?

I know there's a menu item to show and hide the console, but often I need to see output in the console while editing.

Thanks!

Re: Tool Bars Disapp
Apr 24 2005  on content Kate

Is this the wrong forum to ask for help like this (about the toolbars)? I've looked through different forums on KDE sites, and this seemed the most likely one to ask for help on Kate, and I thought I'd have at least heard an indication that this is a previously unknown problem, or unsolved, so if there's a better place to ask, please let me know.

Thank you.

Tool Bars Disappear
Apr 19 2005  on content Kate

I love working with Kate, since it's so easy to use and works great for programming. (I'm self taught, so when I started, I had never heard of an IDE and discovered Kate when I was looking for an editor on Linux.) It gives me everything I need, both the editor and console in one window.

There is one problem I've had with several versions of Kate. Right now I'm using version 3.3.2, but I saw this problem in earlier versions before I recently installed SimpleMEPIS 3.3 on my workstation.

Once I add or change any icons on the tool bar, from then on the changed toolbars, and most other tool bars disappear. Sometimes I'll have a full toolbar show up while editing one file, but it does not show up when I switch files. If the toolbars have disappeared, I only have a minimal set of tool icons (new, open, last doc, next doc, and the reload icon I added). If I go to Settings->Configure Toolbars, then make any change at all, then save the settings, I get all the toolbars back for that one document I'm editing, but not for the others.

At this point, I'd rather not upgrade, due to dependencies and, basically, other than this (and one other problem I'll post separately), everything works, and I don't like over-fixing things.

So what do I need to do to get my toolbars to show up all the time?

Thanks!

Service Menu in Konq
Apr 14 2004  on Discussion

I just read an article about adding service menus to Konqueror (http://developer.kde.org/documentation/tutorials/dot/servicemenus.html).

I tried it and it added my menu for the file manager mode, but not for the browser mode, when I'm browsing a site on the Internet. Is this the way it is supposed to work? I was hoping I could use this to use other programs, since I'm having a problem getting Konq to use anything other than Kaboodle for viewing a video file off the net (and Kaboodle doesn't work for files on the net, vs. files on my own system). (Kaboodle with videos is not the only situation where I'm having this problem -- Netscape plugins won't work, so it is hard to view any file that doesn't display directly in the window when a web page is rendered.)

Is there a way to get service menus to show up for files when I'm using Konq as a browser, not as a file manager?

Thanks!

Re: Re: Cannot View
Mar 18 2004  on Discussion

Mozilla plugins are not working at all.

No plugins seem to work.

No matter what I do to the settings, Konq picks EMBEDDED -- the only exception was when I selected "embedded" and put the Netscape plugin above the embedded player (even though I'm using Mozilla plugins w/ other browsers, they aren't registering in Konq.)

Cannot View Videos
Mar 11 2004  on Discussion

I'm using KDE 3.2 (installed on a Mandrake system through Mandrake Cooker RPMS).

If I'm using Konqueror in a file manager mode, I have no problem viewing videos in the embedded viewer. If I use Konqueror as a browser, and try to view a video file on a remote site, the window changes and looks like the embedded viewer, but it never loads the file. I understand the embedded viewer is Kaboodle, so I tried to watch a video file (in all cases, .mpg and .avi files) from a remote site in Kaboodle by cutting and pasting in the URL for the video file. It did nothing.

I've worked with the settings in Konqueror. I changed .mpg (and all video files) so they would be handled by an external viewer (I changed the embedded option to use an external app and specified gxine), but no matter what I do, Konqueror insists on using the embedded viewer (Kaboodle), and Kaboodle does nothing when given a URL that isn't on my own system.

So how can I 1) Get Kaboodle to handle files through an HTTP connection so it works in Konqueror?, and 2) Get Konqueror to do what I tell it to and actually use an external app when I specify it?

Thanks!

Problems In Kate 2.2
Feb 16 2004  on Discussion

I am using Mandrake 9.2 and just upgraded to KDE 3.2 using the Mandrake Cooker RPMs. There is a lot in 3.2 that I like, but I'm frustrated with the new "improvements" in Kate. Is there any way to deal with these easily?

1) Kate used to automatically delete whitespace at the end of lines, now it doesn't, and I can't even see an option to turn this on (it deletes whitespace when it saves, but not when I leave a line, like it did in the last version I used). I didn't realize how helpful this feature was and now it is not only gone, but there doesn't seem to be an option to use it.

2) I used to use the "Notify when outside program changes files" feature and found it helpful. I can't remember in what version it seemed to work well. I tried it in the new version and it is constantly telling me files are changed. It even thinks a file has changed when no program other than Kate has written to the file. I turned the feature off and almost every time I save, it tells me the file has changed (usually the file has not been accessed by any program since the last save from Kate). Now (with the notify if changed off), I'll save one file, and I'll get the stopsign/X icon next to several files at once, saying they've been changed -- even though NONE of these files have been touched for hours.

This "Notify on change" feature seems to have gotten out of control. My first experience was that it only notified me if the file had actually been changed. Now I can't shut it off and it says files have been changed when they haven't even been touched. Almost every time I save a file I have to deal with a requester telling me the file has changed (when it hasn't).

How do I either get this to work properly (and only give me dialogs when a file has really changed) or stop the dialogs all together?

And is there some way to set Kate so whitespace on the end of lines is automatically deleted again?

(I've got a few issues with Konq too, but I'll save them for another post when this is resolved.)

Thanks!

Hal
