To answer your question about the gradient_shades, the numbers indicate how dark or how much brighter it is compared to the original color. 1.0 being the original color and below that number makes it dark and vice versa.
If you don't want a glossy look to it, make sure the 2 middle numbers are almost or even the same to produce a smooth gradient.
Like this:
{1.0,0.9,0.9,0.8}
That will produce a smooth gradient. |

It has the same effect as faenza action icons, like the back and forward buttons. Except this has a rounded square background with color. :) |

Gimp is a raster graphics editor, it only edits .png files and stuff like it. svg's are a vector format, so you need to use a program such as inkscape, which is a vector graphics editor. |
