What I've to say :
.) Linux is great, what distro ?, what color you like most ?, red ?, green ?, blue ?, .. its the same comparison.

.) FreeOpenNetBSD is also great.

I want to make the switch to linux and so I have been trying to research what would be the wisest choice for me to use as a newbie. So I unwittingly came to this site and read this ENTIRE poll, and ya know what? Now I am MORE CONFUSED THEN WHEN I STARTED!!! :P
This is CRAZY. I thought I would find some sort of logical trend or consensus among "experienced" users, but this is ridiculous! After reading all of the biased and contradicting opinions, I am tempted to just stay on win2k where even though it sucks to use micro$oft, at least I know exactly what I am getting.

P.S.- This is not an invitation to be ridiculed, but merely a desire to find out why the hell this is called a linux "community", and who to believe....??????

This is no discussion, this is a flame war. This poll is entirely unreliable as most people vote for their favourite distro rather than for what works.

I use Mandrake, personally, but I voted for SuSE because I've seen some of their Qt and KDE integration they do firsthand and they're very good. But, like Mandrake, they have their fair share of bugs and inconsistencies.

If you're totally new to Linux, I'd have to recommend Mandrake. Stuff might break, yes, but that comes *after* you get a bootable system. Some of the other distros (i.e. Debian (which is very good once you get it working, but initial installation is crazy)) force you to fix things using the console as part of the installation process. The main problem with Mandrake is that their drak* and *drake series of tools use GTK+ rather than Qt for their GUI and they're very inconsistent even among themselves.

In the end, it's all about how much tinkering under the hood you like to do. Debian is excellent for people who can't get enough of it. SuSE is amazingly consistent with its configuration tools and has good documentation. Mandrake is... easy. Can't say much past that, really, except that Mandrake really does go out of their way to help you avoid the console as much as possible.

SuSE owns all other distros, it's good for beginners and experienced users. I recommend it to anyone, even though i don't use it. For newbies, SuSE is the distro to get!

Me again. Get Debian after you learn the basics of Linux from using SuSE. Buy a book on Linux, and use that to help you with Debian, as it can be very hard to install and configure for someone who is clueless.

My Mandrake 8.0 after installation perfetly found all hardware and liked it properly. I had no problems with devices at all. KDE that went with it (2.1.1) was really slow un unstable, but after i upgraded it to 2.2.2 it started to werk perfect. Speaking about speed i want to say that Mandrake is really slower then Windows 98:)

I agree that Mandrake installs lots of unnessesary shit, but this is not a problem, u can remove it easily.

To my opinion Mandrake is the best not only for his optitmizations but mainly because of it is user-friendly. If Linux will become as user friendly as windows it will surely defeat windows.
