Sorry guys, gotta vote for Mandrake here. As far as "desktop" distributions go, their making the strides nobody else can match. Mandrake is gonna be the Windows Killer (if anyone). Never had problems with stability like some people were saying, probably hardware issues. Great for desktop OS, great for a server... I dunno if many people know, but mandrake has several kernel optimisations the other distributions do not. :)

Just my opinion.

I use Mandrake 8.1 (cooker). The support for hardware is amazing, but the mistakes are aswell. Somehow /dev/ links devices tend to dissapear quite often (dev/dsp, dev/cdrom...). I had some trouble with the my pcmcia cardbus net-card support, I updated kernel to some cooker, and after a couple of minutes configuring properly it was working properly (amazing!). But... where is the sound support now? It took me a while to discover they had added some "nice" features as loading incorrect sound card modules, and another 2 days to solve it properly.

soooooo, they're good coding, but not mantaining the code stable and working.

Just another humble opinion ;)

the purpose of cooker is not to be stable !

I use the mandrake 8.1, it seems very very stable to me. And I also use KDevelop. The only pb I met was with the PAM module, it doesn't allow sometimes acces to my 3d hardware. But it was easy to make it run perfectly.

... that I had to install cooker packages to solve my problems! 8.1 itself, doesn't install properly some device symlinks and has some pcmcia problems, so I had to upgrade to some cooker stuff, adding (of course) more bugs.

But the problem is not that they add bugs, but that everything that was working perfectly before does not work anymore. Why do they have to touch parts of code that is perfectly working before?

Sorry Dude, like I said above I still think SuSE is lead dog. When I tried to install Mandrake 8.1 in addition to my multi operating system, it not only took the liberty to steal one of my pre-existing SuSE partitions, and overwrote it without notifying me. That isn't very mindful of any other partitions / os's, almost monopolistic. And I know how to use fdisk, and manually edit ext2, reiser parts / mount points.... Probably need to install mandrake on it's own drive first, now I don't trust it to deal with those situations any more. Dont eat too much candy, you may get a tummy ache =)

Yeah, this poll is pretty funny ;)

We are probably saying the wrong stuff. I think all linux distro's r fine, and fbsd is good and all, but the real porblem is M$ vv|n|)0\/\/S. This os SUX too much acc and i think winxp is even worse than all other os's including macos.

I can't seem to find a distro that satisfies my need for bloatware.. I try to find the distro that looks sooo cool, but yet runs like a volks trying to pull a tractor trailer... its all to easy to pick, and but yet I have a hard time picking... Please advise....

Pick-up a kernel, disable all modules you don't use, compile and install it. Download QT3 & KDE CVS sources, compile & estabilize it enough, and add the graphical features you really like. Add the tools you find necessary in each distribution,and create some configuration tools (especially designed for YOUR use). Pack it all in one CD,and distribute it as u wish.

Small, fast, and exactly what you want! :))

Use Mandrake

Mandrake is the slowest, most bloated distro I've ever seen before. I installed 8.1 on my wife's system the other day (Celeron 700, 256MB RAM, 15GB HDD) and not only does it install 20 packages you don't need (It calls them dependancies, but the funny thing is, they're not dependancies on any of the other 6 distros I've tried) and not install basic stuff that you do need, but it's slow as hell to boot!

I can boot my router (K6-2 200, 96MB RAM) with SuSE 6.4 on it, log in, type reboot, and have it back up again by the time my wife's Mandrake can be booted once.

And that's just booting, let alone the speed of actually using the damn thing. All I can say is I'm glad I didn't spend the extra money for the professional edition or whatever they call their 7 CD version.

I'm running Mandrake 8.1 on a Celeron 400 (OC'd to 450) with 192mb of SDRAM, Voodoo3 2000 and 6gig hard drive and I have absolutely no problems with it. I'm using KDE 2.2.1 as well.

The install process of Mandrake is very simple. What the hell did you say yes to for install. The high security....Make Web server??? Do us all a favor before downing anything and give some validity of why it could possible be doing this. I installed This on my dads pII400 128MB pc133 Dell computer. 90 seconds is all it takes and i still have played with the kernel. KDE 2.2 rocks on that system. This is true so much that my pops (a low level windows user) enjoys the flexiblity and use of it. This is not knocking GNOME but what is their direction. They are just following the leader!!!

I've tried KDE on RedHat 7.1, SuSE 7.0, Mandrake 7.2, and Slackware 7.2, and on my latest personal project, my own LFS system. What I've found is that it's great on all five. KDE's got the professional look and feel that's (someday, hopefully soon) going to elevate Linux to the mainstream desktop market. Yes, I know there will be lamers who will not rest until they can do everything via a dumbed-down "wizard"... but in reality, that's how the majority of computer users in the world today think. They don't want to have to spend time thinking about how to configure their system, they just want to use it. KDE is taking steps in the right direction by making things easy for the non-techies and the noobs, while at the same time not hiding the advanced stuff from everyone who wants to be more technical (a la what the M$ morons did in WinXP).

Let's all just stop the pointless distro-wars and admit one thing to ourselves: Linux is Linux, and Linux is GREAT, no matter what distro you're using. Same goes for KDE.

Just my two cents =)...
