Weil ich finde, daß SuSE eine "runde" Distri geschaffen hat. Alles wirkt einheitlich und durch die Verwendung von QT für YaST2 haben sie eine (Schein)Integration in KDE geschaffen, die zB Mandrake nicht hinkriegt. Warum Tools in GTK? Häh? Echt, also die SuSE wirkt ausgereift und durchdacht. Von Mandrake kann ich das nicht behaupten, auch wenn es mich damals von Debian erlöst hat.

Und, hmm, Slackware ist doch nur was für Leute mit Profilneurosen, denen Debian zu Anwenderfreundlich ist :()

But the biffest part of the world speaks either chinese(1/3) or spanish. You didn't think about them either did you. Your point is right, but only for the reason that this whole website seems to be based on the english language and thus it is useful for visitors to post in English.

Melle, who doesn't post in dutch either..

It's good for KDE ! Is also good for beginners in Linux !
I use linux since 1998 but i am also a beginner !
My prefered linux distro is SuSE because it's very easy to use, and someone who is comming from Windows doesn't need to make an effort tu use it !
Suse is not only for developers or specialists !

I tried Mandrake 8.1 , RedHat 7.2 and all others distro' but these 3 distro are best for workin on office, home, and can replace windows very easy because they are very easy to use and friendly, very friendly in comparison with others.

Best is Suse 7.3 for me !

I don't know if anybody has noticed this, but I guess NONE of the distributions are very firm candidates:

1.- I use Mandrake 8.1 (cooker): Always updated rpms, latest software, hardware support..... BUT: not very stable, does not use standard paths for KDE, package numbering sometimes goes down instead of up, it does VERY strange things for euro symbol support (for me)......... a bit childish.

2.- Red Hat 7.2: This is always my second option, for similarity. A bit faster and more stable. BUT: Software always a bit older, no much hardware support (pcmcia cards...), the default installation misses some configuration tools (where is linuxconf?). Strong, but not for everyone.


3.- SuSe 7.3: Strong candidate if I could buy the CD-s every time they update version.

4.- Debian, Slackware....: If I could just spend the time to install, configure and recompile all the packages that I use....

Summary: I wouldn't mind to be paying for a linux distribution if they could assure everything could work in my laptop, with no crashes, acceptable speed, and of course, hardware support.

Somebody tried to join RH+SS+MDK distributions and put the best of them in another one? That could be best.

well... since debian packages come out fast in sid, and debian is the ONLY dist that object prelinks the kde debs, and also doesn't make huge debs containg half of the K apps I guess Debian is the ONLY dist where you won't compile KDE yourself... about HW and setup tools - you don't need it in debian since you only set it up once...

If you are using a cooker version than what do you expect? They tell you from the get go that it's not meant for normal use. I use 8.0 and 8.1, compile, update - the whole nine yards and it's very stable.

I run SuSE and Red Hat, and Mandrake and SuSE are at the top as far as stability goes.

... we forgot Conectiva.

If there could be just a bit more information.... and in english!

You get to their main page,(www.conectiva.com) there are 3 language options (portugês, español and english), but as soon as you enter the english version you notice that the information is quite short.

This means that it won't be very supported by people on the net (at least not as much as other distributions).

The latest product (7.0) is shown only in the portuguese version, and the spanish version shows 6.0 (based still in 2.2.17 kernels). Worse on the english version.

I tried anyway to go for the portuguese version (being spanish should not be very difficult I thought).

Well, the information there does not seem to be very technical: no package listings, no version numbers,....

As result, Conectiva might be a good/stable/strong distribution, but I don't dare to try it since it's not very known and they don't provide enough information in their website so that I could trust it.

 Slack Is Stable

been using Slack on and off for last few years. getting off of Windows for good soon (XP licensing sucks), so am looking around at distros.

i really like Slack because it is lean and mean and follows the Linux way of doing things. explanations at the LDP will translate almost immediately. i can always get something fixed under Slack and it like never crashes.

the ONLY reason i am thinking about trying another distro (most likely Debian because of philosophy around it) is that the package management system under Slack just sucks. it's OK if you want to install small packages occassionally...but a major headache for big upgrades or complete OS version upgrades. at least under Slack 7 there is just no dependency checking, etc. i am NOT going to spend days tracking down this .so file and that .so file to get things going.

if Slack doesn't change things soon, i will be forced to move, something i don't want. it also needs to bundle more cool junk toys and stuff on CD for folks. hell, i'll even pay money for the CDs.

all that said, it is very Linux-y and standard at it's core. nice, clean distro.

KDE works and looks great too once you tweak X, get truetype working, etc.
