There used to be one other
program :-) that I needed
without kde/qt gui...
But writing a fix for that
was easy...

 KDE and non-KDE apps

Non-KDE:

  • GIMP (Sorry, Krita isn't really up to the job... yet ;) )
  • InkScape (Again, Karbon14 isn't really there... yet ;) )
  • LyX (though it is included with Konstruct, so its kind of in between somewhere, so I put that one last)

KDE (this, I should add, is not an exhaustive list):

  • amaroK
  • Konqueror
  • Kopete
  • Konversation
  • Quanta+
  • KDevelop
  • Konsole
  • Kate, KEdit

Try Kile as a replacement to LyX, I thinks it's great!

I know Kile is there, but the reason I like LyX is its semi wysiwyg layout system. I am not alone when using this, I have less tech savvy people there as well, and seeing LaTeX code would scare them ;) One of the people I use it with has enough trouble with HTML ;)

Here are the non-KDE apps that I'm using frequently:
- SIM. I just don't like Kopete, dunno why. :)
- Firefox. Come on, I like Konqueror, but Firefox is much more flexible. For me, the most important thing Konqueror lacks, is host-dependent image handling. And stuff like that.
- Thunderbird. Now trying to get used to KMail, as it's wonderful to have such all-in-one organizer as Kontact, but... i'll probably turn back to Thunderbird for a while.. its ideology, customization, behaviour and interface seem to be 'cleaner', though the Gtk's rough look makes me feel sick.
- GIMP
- Inkscape
- xpdf (but i haven't seen the new engine of kpdf)

"- Firefox. Come on, I like Konqueror, but Firefox is much more flexible. For me, the most important thing Konqueror lacks, is host-dependent image handling. And stuff like that."

I find Konqueror far more flexible. Not only does it let me use it as a filemanager for my ftp site, it also displays many pages that don't display well in Firefox because they're geared toward IE.

" - Thunderbird. Now trying to get used to KMail, as it's wonderful to have such all-in-one organizer as Kontact, but... i'll probably turn back to Thunderbird for a while.. its ideology, customization, behaviour and interface seem to be 'cleaner', though the Gtk's rough look makes me feel sick."

I really like KMail's integration into Kontact. Now, I have one stop shopping for my contacts, newsreader, email, and calendar. I think the interface is far more intuitive than Evolution and I agree that KDE/Qt's look is far nicer than anything based on the Gtk engine.

 My apps

by cepheus on: Dec 24 2004

Recent KDE additions:
amarok
akregator
kaffeine
digikam
kwave
kword

Non-KDE apps:
gFTP: hate it, but unlike kbear/konqueror, it supports resume on all protocols

pan: Haven't seen a real KDE competitor here

gthumb: Might leave this someday as showimg is getting better and better. Gthumb has just proven to be a bit more stable

xmms: For various odd audio plugins

mplayer: For when kaffeine barfs. I should check out kmplayer, I guess

xsane: kooka has a much nicer interface, but produces blurry scans when I print. Probably a config issue on my end.

gpdf: Supports some additional pdf functionality that 3.3 kpdf doesn't have

And of course gimp.
