A distro to me does not mean much. I'm practically on a different one every other week. I swap hard drives a lot. Some of my favorites are:

Debian
FreeBSD
OpenBSD

Some ones I hate are:

SuSe
Fedora
Mandrake
---------------------------------------

Why do I hate the ones above. Because the packages are prebuilt mostly built with stuff I don't need. Debian packages run very smoothly though, and on a BSD system I usually copile all my programs from source from the ports collection.

Full Conrol=Gentoo but Gentoo=extreme+time and I simply don't see the point. Also if your one of thoose chaps boasting gentoo and you only installed from a stage 3 then please shush. Gentoo is prebuilt or compile all. Stage 1 for me about 2 days with system bootstrapped, custom kernel, X, and maybe kde done compiling.

Oh and when I don't have time to do all that I just use what I'm on now. Ubuntu is very easy to use and based on Debian.

I really don't care what you say about compiling from stage 1. It just means that you have alot of time to kill and nothing better to do.
So, don't come here and put other people down just to make yourself feel important. Big deal you compile from source, any fool can do that.
Try creating a program and then we can talk. While you are waiting for kde3.x to finnish compiling, I am working on my programming language (its called Ricca) for my computer science class and you still have not accomplished anything except wasting electricty.

yep, Linux is Linux. it just comes in colors. no use trying to compare or put other distros down. that other OS out there, maybe we should put it down.. . hehehe.. .

CRUX Linux.

It is by far, (IMHO) the most BSD-like of all Linux Distro's. I like how anyone can port software to CRUX, without having to commit to a central repository. (auxiliary developers host their ports on normal http servers. Google for httpup) Because of this, official packages are of a very high quality, while niche packages are kept up to date by those who use them. In configuring the optional semi-automatic package manager (prt-get), one is required to rank the order in which the repositories are parsed. This hierarchy can be used to rank port repositories according to trust, package quality, or up-to-date'ness. To graft one of these repositories into /usr/ports, one has only to put the new repositories' .cvsup, or .httpup into /etc/ports. (and optionally add it to the semi-automatic packaging manager, by adding an entry to /etc/prt-get.conf)

Imagine Slackware, with a Ports tree that makes sense. CRUX is probably closest to ArchLinux (ArchLinux being a derivative of CRUX), although ArchLinux has forsaken the Core/Central + Auxiliary/Distributed development model. (and is more complicated all around IMHO) I think that anyone who has become disenchanted of complex, over-engineered package management would enjoy working with CRUX. I would probably use NetBSD 2.x if it was officially out, had support for auxiliary (httpup) development, supported my NIC, and had more simple makefile/script/port syntax.

This poll seems like an appropriate/intended forum for the advertisement of smaller distro's, and although I do not consider CRUX "king of the hill" (is there only one hill?) I do hope that someone here might find fulfillment in their search for a simple and free Unix.

Yoper is what I have running on my computer right now. (I try alot of different distros, almost weekly.) Anyway I just want to put a good word in for Yoper. It runs very fast and smooth, installation is only one disk, dosn't have all that garbage you don't need. Yes, like most things it has a few bugs but they can be over looked. I would definately recommend it.

Other Favorite Distros:
Slackware
Gentoo (when I have time....)
Damn Small (it is a fun one to play with)

Suprising to see Xandros not making it as a choice in the poll .... when as compared to Fedora etc, Xandros uses KDE as the primary desktop environment.

I also feel Xandros has the best "customized" KDE out there ...
