For all the non-believes of Debian's completeness and updatedness.. its all in unstable. There are actually 3 "version".. stable, testing, and unstable. Funny thing is unstable is probably more stable than red hat and others final releases.. forget the beta/stable comparisons. I was a slacker for over a year (started there.. hard start but worth it) but I wouldn't go back after i found apt-get. Slack is still my second favorite distro (i've tried mandrake for fun and redhat).

I started with SuSE, but I ever hated the fact that it was full of unneeded/big packages with lots of things never needed. And I dislike yast a holy lot, you are NOT ABLE to change anything by hand cause yast resets it. AND: That time (it was ver 6.0) I (rookie then) was NOT ably to compile a single source by hand!!!

Then I got Mandrake and i was REALLY satisfied first; easy to install/use, stable, rather slink, ...GREAT! But the version-number grew higher and higher, and the system got more and more unstable with mandrake competing against redhat and suse. Until it was unuseable cause the stability came close to windoof (it hung with openGL - bad luck for a programmer liking openGL...).

Now I use Debian since 2.2r1. It's great, though you have to configure a lot first (BUT: ONLY once and it's not hard at all!). It's slink, fast, stable, ... and everything works! For almost everything there's a package (at least in woody and sid) and compiling is just as easy as breathing: you just do it!

For ME the choice is clear: Debian, from now 'till forever!!!

The added bonus with debian is i'ts speed.
KDE feals rougly twice as fast on my Debian woody compared to Mandrake and they are optimized for pentiums!

the best system for kde in my opinion
is suse, also because they support the
development of kde very much.
(they pay kde developers, ...)

but there is no "best" linux distribution.
there is only the linux distribution that
fits your needs, some like suse, some
like debian, some like redhat, some like
mandrake, some like *BSD (i know its not linux), ...

it doesn't matter, wich system is the
"best", because there is no "best".

stop "distribution wars" and do something useful - use kde ;)

Hi

Maybe the solution to all that stupid distro-wars is simply KDE itself. I explain myself. If KDE featured every configuration tool needed to use a base system, one could install any distro without KDE then install KDE on it and... he would have the best distro.

KDE just has to include an hardware configurator, a working font installer, a webmin frontend into the kontrol panel, a package manager which manages dependencies, and everything is OK.

tried apps like webconfig (integrates to kcontrol) and kpackage?

in KDE 3.0 control center handles your fonts as well

I just saw an article about WebConfig. That seems great.

BUT

That should be included in the default KDE installation. Which is not the case for KDE 2.2.1.

In SuSE you got YaST2 modules in KOntrol, so


You can configure your hardware in kontrol.
You can manage users in kontrol.
You can manaage daemons in kontrol.
etc...
