I agree with Deviant. Consistency is what qualifies a professional and mature GUI. And consistency is what's missing in all *nix GUIs. I love KDE not because I think it's the best GUI but because it's the best to play with. It's still a toy, though the closest to be a serious thing. No matter how you believe that the technologies behind KDE/Gnome are superior to those in other GUIs, both Mac OS X and Windows XP are consistent in every details and give users a COMPLETELY graphical interface. Of course, the biggest reason is they are both proprietary to their own OSes. Most limitations of KDE are actually those of Linux itself.

I don't know how do you use KDE, or what do you do with your PC box, but...

I use Linux + KDE every day, from using it to make my college reports with KOffice or OpenOffice, to surf the internet and chat with my friends via icq... No hangs, reasonable speed and the best... The free to choose what i like, or what i need...

Ok, I'm a System Engeniering student, but consider this:

I have KDE 3 running decently in my K6-2 300 MHz 192 Mb RAM... Win98 hangs a lot but is so ligt when it's without config problems... WinMe runs worse than win98, and Win2000 or WinXP... are tourtles in this PC !!!!

The best way for me: Linux + KDE3

PS: I can show the beauty of KDE to my friends, when they ask... Which version of windows are you using ??? =D

I respect you very much from your positive input about KDE. It sounds great that you can use it on everyday productive basis... But I know I wouldn't be able to, until the X fonts are fixed. They look horrible.

Our opinions aren't really different. I absolutely agree that Linux is better than Windows in many aspects. But the subject here is about GUI. KDE is prettier than Windows XP if tastefully configured :-) But that doesn't make it a better GUI overall. At least, Konqueror is slower than Gnome's Nautilus and Windows Explorer. By the way, with a few tweaks, Windows XP can look very cool too. Just like most art, it is rather pointless to argue which is better on merit of how it now look. But I did vote... and I voted for KDE 3; and the worst interface in my view would be XP. Since people are able to make X look exactly what people want; Apple Acqua happen to have the right look fixed for most people; thought the same cannot be said for XP.

Transparency and things can be added, and fixed, but flexibility is one I took for exception; slapping a flexibility as an after thought is a mistake; U*IX community learned that because it is open, thought M$ didn't venture one bit until XP came (which is too late and still too rigid). I brought this up because I am sure some of you will undoubtly bring up WindowBlind; those works only with standard GUI used in a straightforward manner; and I might add: why did people code non-standard GUI to start with?

The real issue is what's underneath; network transparency is always a free X thing, while the closest thing is in its infancy called Window$ NT Terminal $erver.

So in the bulk of these responses I've noticed that what constitutes a GUI is the look and speed. Ok, I'm willing to accept the fact that a GUI should be asthetically pleasing and fast, but what about usability? I had to vote for X if only because Gnome2 is a joke in usability (lets pray for 2.1...) and as much as I'd hate to say it, most of the fundamental GUI elements (dialogs, menus...etc) are laid out exactly like WinXP (yeah, its true...check this out KDE3 vs. XP ). MacOS X has taken the largest leaps to redefining how people interact with a computer (UI) in a graphical way (G + UI = GUI). I have a suspicion that if BeOS hadn't fallen victem to the bubble we might have seen a GUI aeons ahead of everybody else by now...too bad...

Have fun with KDE3, it may not be breaking all the GUI boundries just yet, but it can't afford to because its free, and when it comes down to it, thats better than paying through the nose for a pretty GUI.

Both KDE and Gnome can't compare when it comes to professionality. Sorry, thats the current situation, face it people !
Don't complain about stupid transparency here, complain about multiple entries in the file type configuration where none properly works for instance !

AFAIK autocompletion has ben there already since quite long time ago. I'm using cvs, but I guess it's there for versions 3.0.x aswell!

In KDE you can even right click the line editor and choose the kind of autocompletition you want!

usability was a strong suit Gnome HAD compare to KDE 1.

that's why my first integrated desktop for X was Gnome.

user-unability was how Gnome is NOW suck compare to KDE 2/3.

that's why I am using KDE now. By the inferno, Gnome has to either fix itself or merge back to KDE before I would even consider usin g it.

the premise for Gnome to split off KDE became a joke now they messed up many things.

I didn't switch to Linux+KDE because of a user interface or graphics, I did it for the stability and speed.

You guys are right about the fonts, they definitely need fixing, but I don't see what the big deal is with transparency. Even if they're was an option for real transparency, I'd turn it off.

I don't want KDE to turn into Microsoft, focusing more on new, flashy features rather than what really counts.

KDE + Linux all the way.

I only really started using KDE recently, with KDE 2.2.2.

I have been using WindowMaker the last few years, which I think is great, particularly for speed and low resource consumption. It is very powerful, and configurable.

Recently I tried GNOME. Personally, I do not like the interface. I've yet to try GNOME2, but I very much doubt I will consider it as a permanent WM.

KDE however, has an extremely powerful configurable desktop. KDE-3 is now my favourite WM. It is now also very stable, and only rarely do I get any problems. As it is, X-Chat and XMMS are the only non KDE apps I'm running now (until I'm happy with noatun for audio)! Occasionally I'll use GIMP or something, but now use KDE apps for pretty much everything.

I would also agree with transparency being an issue, but not a major one.

KDE is the best by far. the most customizable desktop, as you can see by the image a few posts back. The only probalem is with desktop switching. Currently, there is only an on/off option for hitting the side of the screen and switching desktops. I think enlightenment has set the standard! you don't have to wrap, you can change the arrangement of desktops (as opposed to changing panel size), you can make it ANIMATE!
anyway i would run enlightenment but i don't have it (redhat 7.3 :(
