 C++? Yuck!

c/c++==HELL;
Ada et al are much nicer. I try to use Python when I can, Java when I can't. What about Bash? Everyone loves shell scripting!

Yurp, I was looking for the Bash option too. I have loads of publishing work automated with it, and I love it very much. It is virtually one of the first languages I learned after Pascal in school ;-)

Tell it all:
c/c++ == complex/flexible/fast

When size or speed does matter, there are few options to choose from

It is... see 'Other'

BTW: Complaining about a lack of options is lame ;-)

To mess up a Linux box, you need to work at it; to mess up your Windows box, you just need to work on it.

PHP is my fav, since it just seems to work for almost any job that i want. When i am writing scripts i use bash or c++ though. I think i might try and learn python, i have been hearing good things about it.

 Where is Obj-C?

You forgot one of the best languages out there, with plenty of support and good libraries...
Seeing that so much people think Java is a decent languange makes me really sad.... :(

Well, I know that you can use Obj-C on the Mac, but what IDEs and Compilers are available for Linux?

Compiler is the same: gcc.
Check out www.gnustep.org, it's the free implementation of the OpenStep specification.
I have tons of software which compile and run fine both on Apple/Cocoa and Linux/GNUstep.
Windows is supported, too.

ProjectCenter for building your Projects and Gorm for modeling your User Interfaces, courtesy of GNUstep.

http://www.gnustep.org (Platforms supported are listed on the site)

NeXTSTEP3.x/Openstep via ProjectBuilder(PB) and InterfaceBuilder (IB), both the forerunners of Xcode and the updated IB for OS X and OS X Server.

If you never used NeXTSTEP you've missed out on quite a lot, especially when it was Quad FAT and ran on Sun SPARC, HP-Gecko, NeXT and x86.

 Voted for c++, but..

 by Svyatogor on: Oct 28 2004

I voted for C++, because I use it in most cases. However, if I were to name language which I like most, and which i find *beatiful* that would undoubtfuly be Python.

P.S. Java is getting toooo much voted :(
