Mac OSX is #1 in my book when it comes to looks and effects. No other operating system has the beauty of OSX. It's crisp,silky smooth, and clear, no jaggeties, anywhere. It's not cartoonish like Windows XP. It has effects in it like the magnification feature in the dock and the way you minimize somthing in the dock, like a dvd movie, and can still see it. Amazing!!. Nothing can compare not even KDE or Gnome!.

classy, understated (colors too garish??), well-designed graphics, just different enough to be very interesting while still maintaining a familiar feel.

This is one area where GNU/Linux ~should~ be able to smack MS hard. More work on the GUI, with attention to all the small details will produce a similar or even superior product.

I use OSX 10.1 on my G3 as my 'daily driver' OS, and can safely say that it is absolutely the nicest-looking OS out there. I've used XP, and Luna, while better than 'dozes before it, really can't touch Aqua. Apple re-wrote their entire graphics subsystem for this UI, and it shows. And yes, 128x128 icons are perfectly justifiable. :)
