iKons are the best for me! Crystal are fake (combination of iKons, apple icons and others), Hicolors are, well, old-fashioned and Slick are... I don't know, I don't like the colors and the style - too archaic.
But iKons also need a lot of work to do.

Just MHO.

 Slick

by Ty on: May 4 2002

Crystal, iKons, and Hi-color are VERY good icon themes in and of themselves - but they are all the same style, ie, "cartoonish". There isn't a thing wrong with that, I love the look when I'm the mood for it - but they are all cartoonish. The user has abundant choices of cartoonish icons, but what about a more "industrial" look?

Enter Slick.

Slick gave me what I've been searching for. They are very well designed, very detailed, and don't loose their meaning in their photo-realisticness. They give KDE what it has long been missing: an "industrial", serious, non-Fischer Price look.

I'm not saying the other icons are bad - they most certainly are not. Tackat has a very good point about the meaningfulness of icons. Slick just gives us the option of non-cartoonishness for those who want it.

Slick gives us something that isn't a "me too" icon set, while being divine to look at as well. After I applied the theme, I spent ages just looking at those glorious icons dotted all over my desktop and browser window.

I also agree. Slick is what KDE has been missing for a long time. Professional and clean looking icons, no Play Ground in sight.

So, my vote is clear: Slick.

 Unfair Time

This is an unfair time for this poll. Crystal icons are the best IMHO, BUT they are also just the trend at the moment. Crystal is the "hype" right now. Asking what icons are the best when everyones on a crystal kick is unfair to the other icon authors.

The author of this poll really is not very smart;-) He also misspelled the name iKons (iKon)! Oh, God!

 Comunity made please

by uga on: May 4 2002

I need to accept that the crystal icons look gorgeous, but it's not an icon set I would vote to be under KDE by default, as some people want.

The reason is that there's something that nobody seems to notice: the author (everaldo) does not seem to be the one that posts the icons. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the name shown is conectiva8, not everaldo. It seems that the company wants to manipulate the icons themselves: Nobody replies to questions, no mistakes corrected, updates of the icon set that do not show any changes, the icons in the packages are not the same as in the tarballs.... This is not the way to create default icons for KDE.

I would suggest creating a brand new icon set for KDE.Developed not by a single person, but community made. Everyone has at some point developed icons themselves (more or less good).

Anyone can suggest a way to handle this task?

That's a great idea! But it will be quite difficult for our great artist to work together and work consistently. But anyway;
kborrey, amibug, everaldo and others, do you want to work together?

 community theme

Everaldo and other people at kde-artists mailing list are discuting a new default theme for KDE 3.1, this theme would be community developed as you want and as the default kde icon theme is.
It will be something between today's default theme and crystal. Very clean and nice IMHO, for the pics I've seen.

And always remembering: kde 3.1 will have svg icon support (I hope they implement icon zoom (real zoom, not just changeing between 2 sizes) on desktop, and not only on kicker.

Really good idea. I'll see what's going on on the next cvs update (quite long time I didn't checkout).

Anyway, not everybody updates from cvs, I think IMHO that this icontheme should be posted here at least partially. 1.000.000 "kde-look people" can help more than 5 cvs guys, and it could be that some people offer good icons for it.

As said by Everaldo, he would accept new icons (given that they're not stolen from other os-s...etc)

What's wrong with it that Conectiva wants to keep it's own look?
I don't see anything wrong with that..
Do you?

First, Crystal isn't meant to be the default iconset for KDE 3.1

Second, if you would have read some of Everaldo's comments you would have seen that he doesn't speak English very well, which is (according to what he said) one of the reasons why he doesn't always reply to questions and other stuff.
(and I can perfectly understand that, since English isn't my native language either)

Third, wasn't there some kind of file size limit here at KDE-look.org?
(maybe that's the reason of the different packages?)

If you have another read on my posting (:)) you'll see what I really said:

There's SOME people that want it as default in kde, and I was giving reasons for it not to be the default one.

There is nothing wrong of course if the company wants to keep the icons for themselves, as far as the iconset is not included under kde. This would mean that everytime CVS has to be updated they depend on conectiva to be doing their work (as seen so far, it would take ages ;) You have to notice aswell that there have been some *virtual* updates of the package without changing anything (company promotion?)

About the download size... have you downloaded it? It goes to a brazilian ftp server for me, so no size concerns. It's not settled on kde-look (at least not when I dowloaded for last time).

Now, concerning Everaldo, I have nothing against him. HE (and not the company) has done a great job. I've followed his posts and comments on the cvs lists. What's more, I think that being his own job and even gpl'ized, he should be posting it himself, not under the company's name.

Well, you should have noticed so far that my english is not very good either.... didn't you? :) So I understand him perfectly. I even tried to write in spanish, but as I said, I don't speak portugese.

At last I finished writing.... ufff!

 Slick

Crystal is a great icon theme and I have gotten a lot of addons to the original theme.

Here are my adddons:

http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=1561

http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=1615

http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=1637

http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=1507

http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=1498

http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=1335

http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=1573

http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=1477

http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=1637

From some of these I only took the ones I really liked. But, most of the time I liked all the addons so I took the whole thing. Now I have a pretty complete Crystal Icon Theme. However before this the icon theme was very incomplete compared to other icon themes like Slick.

Slick has 1925 icons. Even more than the original KDE HiColor theme!
I think slick icons 1.3.1 is by far the most complete KDE icon theme I have ever seen. Amibug must have been working a very very long time. I also love his icons they lookr ealistic and really cool.

Get them from his website:
