I voted 'Other' because there's one area where we need an awful lot of work. If you've ever done any multimedia work in GNU/Linux before, from simply setting up video playback to recording and mixing music and video, you'll know this is true.

At the moment we have a mess of many different hardware layer backends, lots of different places for codecs, lots of different multimedia systems (e.g. arts, gstreamer, nmm, mas, jack, etc.), and lots of apps just making a complete mess of it.

What we really need is one framework that ties together all audio and video input and output. Gstreamer's an ideal candidate, given it's rise in the GNOME world. It would be compatable with ALSA and other similar hardware layers on the backend, and all Qt/KDE apps would use it for output.

Ideally you'd have Gstreamer handling everything from your microphone and capture card through your applications and their audio/video codecs to your speakers, all seamlessly. Set-up would be simply a matter of setting up ALSA to work with your sound card, some similar driver for video capture etc., and then Gstreamer for everything software-related.

I totally and absolutely second this: While GST as has been mentioned a gazillion times before is not network transparent, it has all the features any desktop multimedia system would need. And as for testing it out now: Go Go Gadget amaroK GStreamer output plugin... ok, that didn't work, but you get the idea ;) amaroK is working as a testbed for using GStreamer in KDE applications, and I can (as an every day user of said program) vouch for, if not it's stability, then it's versatility. Alsa plugin crashes on you? Use the oss one :)

The problem is on the application side, not on the framework side. There is very good work going on in NMM (network multimedia middleware), with an excellent academic background and no influence from GNOME or KDE.

But the problem with NMM is precisely that GNOME has already committed itself to Gstreamer. So if KDE adopts NMM, we're back to square one... two different frameworks means twice the hassle for the end user (installation, configuration) and for the programmer (lots of backends to support).

If both KDE and GNOME got behind Gstreamer in a big way, really made it shine both as a framework and in the way applications use it, and pushed for it through freedesktop.org, we might, in a few years, finally have most of the major multimedia apps using one single framework. Hallelujah!

Well, IMHO, scanning text must become an awful lot better. The "primitive" scanning that I have to live with on my linuxbox is the reason, why I still have one win98 partition with Omnipage doing the text-scanning job. But it would be so nice, if I could get rid of Omnipage. Or is there any software that is equally good in linux?

Video grabbing etc

I also voted "other" as I totally agree with the comments above regarding the complete lack of a stable application for video grabbing and processing. Kino comes closest but is still very unstable. I know the backend [video4linux] is there for this but having to go to Windoze to grab video from the tv or vcr hurts. KDENlive and KDETV need now to concentrate on this as an urgnt priority.
