Why is there no "I used all" button? Well, actually I started with Gnome, but all the time, I constantly switch (and still do) between Gnome, Kde, Blackbox, IceWM, Xfce, twm, fvwm and enlightenment. : )

Same: KDE for 'normal use' and when 'Gimping' cos of Kicker and the 'automatic window unshade on mouseover' feature that I dont know the name of. Blackbox when I have something important to do and I dont want to distract myself with reconfiguring stuff. Gnome for a change and sometimes when using gimp. IceWM to get something done fast but with the creature comforts blackbox lacks.
Its great to be able to choose!

So why don't you just switch this off?

It's really annoying and shouldn't be the default IMHO.

To me it looked like he likes it ;) I have to agree. When I still used GIMP 1.2, the sheer amount of open windows forced me to use the mouse-hover to unshade to make sure I had some screen realestate left over for the image I was working on ;) Now I've got GIMP 2 and a setup for it that looks rather like Photoshop :) http://www.leinir.dk/temp/screenie-gimp.jpg

Well... then why doesn't he enable it in KDE? Haven't tried Blackbox though. Maybe it does it better?

I may have given you the wrong end of the stick:
I like and use the automatic window unshade feature when I am using the gimp so I can have lots of dialogs open and see the image while drawing - I'm gonna get Gimp2 sometime soon - for pretty much that reason.
Blackbox doesn't seem to have such a function - AFAIK
Hope that clears it up

Yes, yes, fvwm2 was quite cool... My first "real" distro I looked around myself was Slackware 7.0, and I even managed to use fvwm95 for some time. Didn't take me long to realize how ugly a win95 interface was, so I switched to Gnome+Enlightenment, and was there for a while... That worked well enough for me until I tried RedHat 6(I think that's what it was), where I chose KDE1, then a bunch of other distros, eventually going to KDE2 and never back :)

I first used gnome1.4, which was ok. Then Gnome 2.0 came out, and it really annoyed me to hell. LESS options, but nevertheless SLOWER, how can that be?

than I switched to XFce4, but GTK+ 2.0 apps were still slow at that time. This was the time, when I used Linux only as my secondary OS next to Windows. But than - about a year ago - I switched to fluxbux and started using KDE/Qt apps only, and Linux became real fun. Now I use Ion as my window manager, and still use kde apps only (and of course xterm, irssi, vim and other great command line programs). I've never had such a fast desktop system :)

...I go back and forth between XFce and KDE. If you have older machines, XFce has some great virtues (it's not as resource hungry, is very quick, customizable, and looks sexy).

There is TWM and AfterStep. Both of Which were pretty much the choices on RH 4.0 But then I saw this neat looking WM for FreeBSD called KDE and I've been in and out of using it ever since. Second choice ... Either WindowMaker or IceWM just love the speed.

Actually explorer.exe does not draw widgets or window borders, it is most comparable to kdesktop/kicker, since it provides the desktop (literally just one giant icon-style list box) and task bar. You can change your "shell=" line in system.ini, and use something other than Explorer (i.e Program Manager, or TK Gooey). Explorer, of course, also provides file browsing (and web browsing by sharing components with iexplore.exe), and therefore could also be compared to Konqueror. What all this really shows is how truly modular Free Software is. It is for this reason, that I wouldn't really consider anything in Windows or desktop or window manager, since the OS kind of does it all through suffocatingly integrated components (i.e trying to truly remove the web browser). I think the "Other" option is intended for some other DE or WM for a Unix-like OS. If you went directly from MS to KDE, then I think "I never used anything else than KDE" is appropriate, since it's a DE/WM poll, not an OS poll.
