Maybe Beginner is not the correct term to use, seeing as it has got a negative implication. Possibly it could be a simple question if KDE asks the user wether or not it considers itself an Advanced user. This way we avoid the Beginner/ Novice/ Whatever words, that some users wrongly will take offence at. Just an idea :)

I believe that is exactly the point. We need an entry point for novice users, and we need them to accept that they are without stuffing it down their throats. There are so many options they do not need to know, and the ability to tick a field somewhere that says "Show advanced options in settings dialogs" would, to me, seem like a very good way of doing this. It needs to be in a very obvious and easily accessible place, of course, otherwise it'll get too much in the way. A button that says "Show Advanced Options" (or "Hide Advanced Options") in the different Settings dialogs would seem a reasonable thing to do as well. But basically, why should the novice users have to suffer for being less experienced? There are so many things they do not need (I have very first hand experience with this type of KDE user, and would argue for them anytime).

Well, one of the reasons, why companies like Sun, HP or RedHat have choosen Gnome and not KDE is that Gnome started to concentrate on the core features and stripped down the functionality to what is really required.

As a result Gnome is easier to use by novice users and end user support costs are lower. And that's something, big companies really care of.

But I do not want KDE to have fewer features. What I would like is to have a simple mode for novice users that only provides basic features (e.g. most of the customizability stuff is not necessary for Mrs. Secretary) while still having the option to have all features for power users. Unlike Gnome, where most features have been removed.

I don't think the amount of options is a problem by itself. It's how you present them that counts.
Right now in KDE the presentation is quite messy, therefore they seem to much in the sense that if you removed some everything would be much more simple.
In some cases you do want less options but in others is just the way/place they are presented to you that is just wrong, so by changing it the amount of options would seem right.

I really like all the cool features in KDE (kio_slaves and KParts are really really cool!) but the first thing in my wishlist for KDE is more stability, it still happens too often that some KDE application crashes, but sometimes KDE even freezes my computer! (Could be hardware related too :)

Anyway, features are (very) cool, but more stability would be even cooler atm.

The first thing someone who complains about speed should do is get rid of keramik - use a light style or install plastik or alloy - also get a light win decor, turn off all the animatios, all the previews...

If that doesn't work then complain about speed.

Oh but that is too much work, there should be an easy way to make it faster instead. Yes agree, and there is! Kpersonalizer, 3rd step!

Hm, if you compare KDE with XP, KDE is already very, very fast. It's even faster if you consider the higher level of customizability and the X-Server based GUI.

KDE has loads of features, and I don't want to see any of them leave.

But they do need some cleaning. In KDE 3.2 Alpha there has been a lot of work to clean things up, but there is still a lot of old dialogs that need work. Here are some examples.

Configuare desktop, although it is simplified, the most commonly used icon is "Background", and that should be the default option, not the 4th.

The Konqueror configuartion has 17 tabs! I really think that the configuartion dialog should be split into two seperate ones, one for the file manager bit and one for the web browsing.

The Control centre needs cleaning up. It shouldn't show options thats not relevent to my computer. For example if I'm not running KDE on a laptop then the laptop releated options shouldn't be displayed.

Hopefully the KDE team and developers will be able to make things easier to use without removing features like gnome did. Its so rediclous in gnome 2.4 you can't even have bookmark folders in the epiphany browser.

Well, the number of features is just a little overloaded, the real problem is the poor implementation of many and poor UI design in general.

MAny apps do not seem to be context sensitive and so present me with dozens of useless options.

KDE has some context menus you wouldn't believe! They include just about
everything except an option to make you breakfast when you actually should only
see a few entries re

What annoys me the most about these super duper bloated menus all over KDE is
that they often have just about everything EXCEPT what I want.

For example, here are the context menu entries that come up when I highlight
some text and right click:

Up
Back
Forward
Reload
Open in New Window
Open in Background Tab
Open in New Tab
Add to Bookmarks
Open With
Encrypt FIle
Create Data with K3b ...
Copy To ->
Select All
Stop Animations
View Document Source
Viw Document Information
Secuirity ...
Set Encoding ->

In addition, most of these entries do nothintg to the text. For example "Copy To
->" copies the whole page and K3b sets up the whole page for burning and
"Encrypt File" would encrypt teh whole page and Open in New Tab opens the entire
page in another tab etc.

Now the funny thing is, that even with 18 context menu entries (not counting the
hundreds of submenu entries) a simple COPY command was left out!! Another odd
thing is that right clicking on a link will yield a simple COPY command but not
on highlighted text!!?

Wha the user actually needed to see when right clicking on highlighted text
should have been something simple like in Mozilla:

Web Search for "selected text"
View Selection Source

But, I'm not really suprised that Konqueror included 15 useless and confusing
entries when doing something as simple as highlgihting text, after all right
clicking on empty part of the page will give you the EXACT same menu.not exactly
context sensitive menus...

The worst part is that such bloated context menus are all over KDE, for example
clicking a floppy will yield 17 entries, albeit less than when right clicking on
text, but still a usability disaster.

I really hope that such things will get cleaned up before 3.2 this is enough to
confuse advanced users, let alone newbies, this is perhaps the biggest problem
with KDE. "
