 kde4 is _darn_ slow

by hoernerfranz on: Mar 1 2008

Score 50%

well, the subject says it:
kde4 turned my computer (2.5 GHz dell GX270) into a real slug.
and no, I don't use nvidia graphics or something else which has been reported as problematic.
I hope things will get better when qt 4.4 is out.
In the meantime, I'm back with kde 3.5.9, which is stable, complete,
and _fast_.

 Promising but slow

I'm using Gentoo and KDE 4 is too slow to be as usable desktop for me. It's not the loading times but the window movement, I use Nvidia, maybe that is why?

KDE 4 looks nice, promising but still behaves like a beta to me. Performance is very poor. I agree with the first post, it is slow, sluggish, proxies don't work either, (am I missing something here?)

 Good start

I have used now KDE 4.0.0 since start and now 4.0.1 (soon 4.0.2) and it's blazing fast desktop, much faster than KDE3.5.x but it really need to get more applications ported and more configuration options! (more than 3.5 has now!).

Only thing what is still buggin on me is Kwin 3D mode, Kwin dont like Nvidia or ATI drivers so need to wait. Littlebit what i used Kwin effects, they were good and usable.

I suggest waiting 4.1 version so we get more applications. (and for developers to port applications to KDE4! especially mandvd and manslide and make them as KDE apps, move away from current GUI!)
Im hoping that Kword gets to Koffice2 when it's released, now it seems Kword stays out because lack of manpower :-(((

KDE is made for users by users....
What can you give back to others?

For me it is just slooooow. Whenever a system sound is going to appear the whole desktop freezes for a minute!

i tried kde 4 on a live cd. looks really cool,

but it's not done yet. My distro (sidux) will

upgrade from 3 to 4 when 4.1 is ready. until then,

i try alternative wms or just use kde 3.5.8.
