 iPAQ + linux!

by Hintzy on: Oct 25 2006

Score 50%

Since I put linux on my iPAQ, it's actually quite useful/powerful now! (WinCE sucks! :-p ) It's got some very addictive SDL-powered games and the ability to add/remove software without a host pc and M$ activesync, but the real capability comes from its expansion slot: a memory card turns it into a media player (XMMS, mplayer, etc), the wifi card adds tons of stuff (mail, internet, gaim, ftp, ssh, vnc server/client), and I'm hoping to get a GPS adapter for Christmas!

Funny how I replaced the OS and discovered I had a real computer in my hand the whole time! :-p

 Cell phone!

Okay, I'm gonna sound not-too-geeky, but I think the cellphone is the most important from the list. MP3 players are nice (though some phones can replace them), and USB sticks are fine too (though MP3 players can replace them :)), but cellphone is used to communicate with people, which IMO is more important.

Cool

I only doubt that booting from an usb stick regulary is a good idea. AFAIK windows needs to write something on its root partition. All USB flash drives are capable of about 1 million writes (which isn't as much as it seems). Or maybe you've found a way to bood windoze from a r/o partition?

If worst comes to worst one can still use a magnet and iron filings to adjust the bits on the hard disk manually.

That's why I voted for "Other". I also checked my vote using iron filings.
