It's time to bring *real* functional programming languages to the desktop.

Yes, but Java and C# are easy to use language, which could also be 'misused' for scripting, if you transform the code to bytecode and use this bytecode in some sort of cache to rerun it the next time.

Please NO C# in KDE!! I realy hate c#. c# is a realy stupid language and i hate that i have to learn it for school.

i'm happy with all the 13 other languages i can write, but please don't bring c# to my lovely kde desktop!! ;)

C# is one of the greatest languags ever! Mono is faster than Java, C# is easier than C++, it is universal, it's just great.
I'm currently working on the Qt-Mono bindings and I hope the KDE bindings will soon follow.

Besides: C#, VB.NET and so on are really no scrpting languages. But there is one scripting language for Mono called 'Boo'. You can compile it to CIL or simply execute the code at once.

One key attribute for a "desktop scripting language" is popularity. The purpose of a desktop scripting language is for the USER to write quick-n-dirty scripts. While Haskell is a good language, you're not going to find too many end users willing to learn it just to write one script for the desktop.

At my job, I do all of my scripting in MATLAB! I also know (for work purposes) C and Fortran. Don't think any of those would be too handy for "desktop scripting"...

Perhaps it's time I learn some Python... :-p

Of course not. Look at programs like amaroK or Superkaramba. Both are offering plugins that are written in a scripting language (currently Python). Or think about KOffice, where someone would need something that is as powerful as VisualBasic in MS Office.

AREXX was a great appliation scripting language on Amiga. No equivalent nowadays :-(

AREXX was an adaptation of the REXX language from IBM for the Amiga.

Some aspects of ARexx look suspiciously similar to DCOP. Does that mean that some KDE devs are ex-Amignas?
