i've actually voted "3.4.3 was better" but thought on "wrong direction", too.

so, here are my arguments:
1. haven't actually noticed any improvement;
2. quite a few new bugs (esp. konqueror and kicker) - very irritating;
3. various old bugs unfixed;
4. still poor amd64 support.

i could do pretty well with the 3.4.3 bugs while the new ones are much more irritating. konqueror crashing much more often, kicker crashing by every logging out, keyboard applet in the corner opposite to kicker and more :/

imho, this is quite enough to think there was not much point in upgrading :(

Poor AMD64 support??? I running KDE from 3.4.1 to 3.5.1 w/o any problem. On Gentoo.

heh, sure, 'cause you're compiling it with the 64bit support!
what i meant is that if you don't feel like waiting overnight to get the new version of kde, you might be having problems finding the right binaries compiled for 64 bits.

 buggy

ammmm one thing i came to realize after 3 years using kde is that every qt app tends to crash one way or the other, i would simply have been the happiest user out there if it wasn't like that but lets face, kde apps do have big yearning to crash, some apps really come to the place where they r not really useable and there r plenty of those, from the other hand i still believe that kde is the most feature rich DE out there, and aint gonna loose my shares with kde, though i hope kde4 will bring some more stability.

yes totally right

i'am using linux because i dont like software wich crashs often and you can´t repair ;)
i stopped using my winXP because after the half year reinstall and all the work of restoring my configs i couldn´t check/uncheck the small checkboxes in the network config dialog ;) very usefull

and now under kde it´s not much better because here are bugs that are REALLY annoying e.g. desktop icons, crash messages during shutdown of kde, panel crashes and only one of these bugs was fixed with kde 3.5 -> the crash of my desktop

so i strongly hope kde4 brings more stability because if you reach that i would be totally happy with kde ;)

and i´am working on it myself too because i´am an developer an soo i fill out a lot of bugreports and try to fix self

so i think the kde team has to shift there work to fixing bugs and bringing more stability because this is the BIGGEST problem wich kde has at the moment i think

it's a great pity to program such good software with the only problem of being buggy ;)

 Very happy with KDE

I run Mandriva 2006 cooker and its so bleeding edge sometimes it hurts but thats the only way to easily update to the latest and greatest KDE. I keep hoping this or the other annoyance/bug/feature will get fixed in the next release.

So after about three years I want to say yes there are still bugs, but my experience has being getting better and better.

The biggest difference came when I upgraded an old 900Mhz IBM Thinkpad laptop to 512Megs RAM and KDE 3.5.1. Then everything happened real snappily and there is now so much integration and slickness it blows me away sometimes.

Again, there is still a ways to go but this is definetely the best KDE ever!

 Not a big improvemen

I mean - kde 3.1 to 3.2 was a big improvement, 3.2 to 3.3 - even bigger. 3.4 was the greatest KDE series ever. Now I look at 3.5. Well, it's good, but looks more like 3.4.5 should be. Some new features added, some bugs fixed, some bugs introduced. Nothing astonishing. I just hope that it's because the devs concentrate their efforts on the 4 series.

 Stability issues?

by tisource on: Feb 17 2006

KDE for me has been rock solid, from 3.3 all the way through 3.5.1 (which is what I'm running now).

My only major issue is some icon placement issues (icons don't always stay where they're supposed to).

I wish XP had the intuitiveness that KDE has.

I do not use icons, but superkaramba themes keep jumping in positions of each other. In other words, after reboot, themes are not in positions they were before.

 KDE3.5 thoughts

YOU ALL MUST HAVE BAD CONFIGURATION (or braked it yourself ;) )
I used to have a couple of bugs in 3.4, BUT I DISCOVERED THAT IT WAS BECAUSE OF BAD HARDWARE!!! If GCC crashes with a segfault, check your damn hardware, will ya?!?

I installed 3.5 (with yum in FC4) AND I HAVEN'T SEEN A SINGLE BUG! Not even one! NOTHING! It is running crystal-clear! With KDE3.5, I now have what I call "probably the best OS in the world" ;)

Also, about the HW: ALWAYS check your hardware. In Windows XP, most games (like NFSU2) were working OK, same for most programs (the office suite), but for a HW-intensive program like a compiler, THEY ALL CRAHSED. Windows' doesn't tell ya, but in Linux, it tells me its a segfault, that means: "an ireproductible error! It was most probably caused by a hardware failure". Don't laugh at that! Its either the hardware or the drivers! PERFECTLY true!

I was quite shocked when I realised HOW broken my hardware was! Now I have absolutely NO crash anywhere! Not even in Windows with top-notch games! (which is quite a miracle!)

So, before you start saying like a jackass "KDE3.5 sucks; a zillion bugs; worst than previous" etc. just check if it isn't YOUR fault for this situation. Don't stress the developers that made a TOP software that you can get for 0$.

So go check your computer, test your RAM, try to downclock your CPU with 50-100MHz, put your finger on your video card to see if it isn't too hot, etc.etc.etc.

It could also be the fact that you haven't properly installed KDE3.5 (you could have the 3.5 program but old configuration).

Either to this (check your PC, configuration), or shut the f@#$ up!

Btw, I voted for "A big step forward". Why? Its the most stable DE I have EVER seen! (ofcourse including Windows XP)

The only comment I could have about KDE and all unix DE is that these do not anti-aliase pictures that are zoomed out (ie: a picture's or movie's preview in Konqueror and others looks so "pixeled") Very very ugly. For ex., open a category in this site: the preview for a theme (or anything) looks like hell. Like I said before, so "pixeled". Windows does that to pictures. If KDE could do anti-aliasing to these stretched pictures, it would be one major step in its look.

I could be wrong though, but this is how I have noticed in Windows XP.

thx for your tip

but i´am very sure my hardware is ok because the rest of my box runs perfect and even a full memtest with no errors is ever the case.

with the temperature is evereything ok because even my harddisks are active cooled and nothing is overclocked

and i have here 3 pc´s to test. all are different age and complete different hw and on each box i have the same probs even with default config

some of my probs are 64bit dependent ok but not all because not all of my test systems are 64bit ;)

this kind of probs i have are well-known and are a kde or qt issue i think

for example sometimes my taskbar (which automatical hides afte 3 sec.) crash´s or dousnt appear for 1min or so

and i tested gnome and it is very more stable but for me unusable because i dont like its user friendliness

so to sum up your words, basicly what you're saying:
kde user's had to be one of this options:
-hardwere sale's man
-kde developer
-kde hacker
-extremely talented
-all of the above

you know what, I'm buying it:), hope the rest will do the same, though i doubt it:(

well, i think i couldn't.
as far as my knowledge goes kde's supposed to be functional in the first place. now, there's not too much functionality in something you have to debug, tweak, develop and so on, yourself.
i wouldn't be at all happy, had kde turned into a sort of a "desktop from scartch" thing, and this is the direction i feel you seem to be pointing at.
the idea itself is not a bad one, i think but i certainly wouldn't wish the out of the box version to get abandoned.

ahh i forgot something: i´am a developer and on my box i compiled a gentoo from stage 1 without one error so i dont think my hw is the prob

and the driver should all be ok because my test pc´s have different drivers and my hw is "official" linux supported so i really think it´s kde or qt

and by the way i dont think your kde has NO errors this is impossible

well, i say, you're damn lucky, you are.
for me, kde 3.5.1 is buggy like none before. it can't be due to hardware 'cause gnome and xfce work just fine. maybe it can be due to missconfiguration but hey - i have never had soo many problems with any kde before, and haven't changed a single line in the configs for a good time.
and i'm certainly not the one to say that. imho, 3.5 is an insect zoo, and you're just too lucky.

:D I think me and the rest of the world "be" perfectly normal, but it's you whose the unlucky guy...

btw, the same thing happened to mee to! Windows running ok, gnome running (almost) ok, etc. It COULD be KDE, or the fact that is HW-intensive? Ya, well, I DID compile the whole linux kernel with no crash.
It also could be AMD's fault, for "pushing" their CPUs a little too far.. (or something gone wrong with the RAM chip inside the CPU; or the program in Linux that handles the CPU speed?)

Anyway, I solved my problems by downclocking 5% of my CPU. It would be very interesting if you would do that and tell us the result! I would apreciate it alot. Thanks.
