i think kde should be configured by default as gnome - 2 panels makes life much easier... :D

And makes your desktop space smaller... I'd like the kicker a bit smaller than it is now in the default, let's not waste precious desktop space :P

just add alt-enter as binding for kwin for full-screen. you can't beat that amount of desktopspace... ;-)

I have a two-display xinerama setup.
On the left screen I have a kicker on the bottom, centered. It contains the clock, the systray and some application starters.
On the same screen on the top, there's a window list.
On the right display, on the top there's the same window list as on the left (damn, I hate it that I can't do something like this in windows!).
On the right screen again, there's another kicker at the bottom with some application starters, a clock and a system monitor.
Oh - both bottom kickers contain the desktop pager, all kickers are hidden until I hit them with the mouse and all but the left bottom kicker use full display width.
I just love kicker :-)
(Anyone knowing a similar app for use with windows I have to use at work?)

On the bottom of the screen I have a quite classic Kicker with the K-Menu, the desktop switcher, the taskbar, the systray and a clock, plus icons for KCalc, Konsole and Kate which I find useful to always have under the hand.

On the bottom left (1/3 of the height), another panel contains my bookmarks and some quick browsers pointing to my home and other projects. I think that's a rather task-oriented behavior. I have no icon for Konqueror but only for URL's.

On the top of the screen, I have a docker-like panel with all the apps I use the most often. I seldom see the K-Menu.

And of course, all the panels are set to auto-hide. I see them only when I want... or when (that stoopid) KDE shows them because the mouse reaches the border of the desktop.

By the way, IMHO, the way the auto-hide panels are handled in KDE 3.5 was something that wasn't broken and that didn't need to be fixed. I definitively preferred when the panels were shown only when the mouse touched them. My nephew who is a Windblows user laughed when he saw panels popping on the screen for no apparent reason. If I don't laugh that only because I'm a die-hard KDE supporter... and I know this misbehavior will be (re-)fixed one day.

Popping up Kickers?
I use the auto-hide feature, too.
When does your kicker popup without any reason?
I can't remember to have ever experienced this.
Anyway, I have a similar problem with XP :-)
It sometimes doesn't hide the task bar after the mouse left it so I can't reach the menus and title-bar of windows anymore :-/.
On my private system, the task bar pops up all the time every few seconds, so I can't use the autohide feature at all...
May I know laugh at windows? :-)

But seriously, is there a bug report that describes your problem?

I said "without reason" because I think there's no reason for a panel to appear if the mouse doesn't touch it. And no, there's no bug report because this isn't a bug, this is a feature. It's a new way for KDE 3.5 to handle auto-hide panels: to show a panel when the mouse reaches a defined "hot spot" which can be either a border or a corner of the desktop, independently of the size of the panel.

For some reason, when I updated KDE to version 3.5, this behavior was activated by default. I found it very stupid, especially since the hot spots of all my panels were set to bottom left corner by default. I changed them and I learned to live with it... until I deactivated the whole feature yesterday. ;-) (Don't ask why I didn't do it earlier.)

As for panels that remain on screen when they should disappear I wrote a bug report. But maybe deactivating the hot spot feature will cure this problem too. I wait and I'll see...

I have 2 panels at the bottom. The first panel is high enough to have task buttons in 2 rows. It also has Kmenu and Konsole buttons at the left side and system tray and clock at the right edge. The second panel's height is the minimal allowed. It has (left to right):
"Show Desktop" button
"Settings" menu
"System menu"
"Storage media" applet (to quickly mount/unmount removeable media)
some spare space
Mini CLI
Color Picker applet (sometimes it's very handy)
System monitor which shows CPU usage graph
Media Control which controls amaroK (though I rarely use it thanks to multimedia keyboard).

I'll post my screenshot tomorrow.

It is not the size of the hammer that counts. It's how you wield it.

The order of stuff in the main panel has changed, as has the number of launchers, but the layout of the panels is basically the same.

I have the default one at the bottom but with reduced amount of launchers, leaving only KMenu and Show Desktop. The other one is located at the top left side. It has only launchers for my most used programs. This panel shows up when I hover my mouse pointer over its location and hides when the mouse pointer is out of the area. The only problem with the auto hide option is that the slowest appearance/disappearance animation is still too fast. :(
