 CPU, temp. files

by Deciare on: May 15 2005

Take any directory containing hundreds of images or other thumbnail-able files and try opening it with Nautilus or gThumb. Then try the same thing in Konqueror or Gwenview. KDE generates the file list slowly, takes longer to generate a thumbnail for each file, slows to a crawl until a thumbnail for every file has been generated, and eats plenty of memory in the process. That happens even when thumbnails have already been generated and they're being loaded from cache.

Another thing I don't like is the way KDE handles temporary files. When I try to extract files from a compressed archive without saving it as a permanent file first, half the time I can't extract or view anything in the archive because the temporary file no longer exists.

Or if I have a compressed archive on disk and try to view a specific file in it without extracting it first, then only KDE apps are able to read the temporary file before it gets deleted. For example, if I have a .zip containing several MP3s, listening to one of those files in Kaboodle works OK, but listening to the same file in Beep Media Player causes BMP to complain that it can't find the temporary file.

Isn't there a way to determine when a temporary file is no longer being used and only delete it then?

 Speed.

Voted "Speed" since it can never be fast enough. The speed I'm think of is load tid.

 startup times

Most KDE applications are quite fast. Konsole beats xterm scrolling/drawing (try "time ls -lR"). KWrite can replace regexps faster then VIM, while keeping syntax highlighting on.

There is one other thing that bothers me, and that's the startup up of most apps. If I like to play an audio file, I don't want to wait 4 seconds before noatun loads. same goes for many other kde apps.

afaik the startup times are being improved with GCC4, QT4, KDE4.

You could also emable prelinking, which improves startup times.

also, if you run noatun on startup, and put it in the tray (i think you can do that automatically, i use amarok), then you wont have to wait for the startup times.

prelinking's biggest (only?) speed up is for startup times, try it, its reversable.
