I'm in trouble: what choise match a kernel in the gentoo portage???
Is it a "Vanilla kernel.org kernel with some patches"?
Or is it a " Patched distro kernel optimized to my needs"?
Or is it more a "Latest updated distro Kernel with altered settings" or even a "Latest updated distro Kernel"???
Bah, it can be "Original distro Kernel with some settings changed"...uhmm, or "Original distro Kernel" !!!

Help me, please!!!

"vanilla

1. (Default flavour of ice cream in the US) Ordinary
flavour, standard. When used of food, very often does not
mean that the food is flavoured with vanilla extract! For
example, "vanilla wonton soup" means ordinary wonton soup, as
opposed to hot-and-sour wonton soup."
Vanilla is the unofficial name for any unmodified kernels, stable or not. For example, 2.6.11 w/o any unofficial patches is stable and vanilla. 2.5.10 was called unstable, but was still vanilla.

It is not the size of the hammer that counts. It's how you wield it.

Your poll options don't make any sense. How the heck does a non-Linux user answer any of this? At least give us BSD users a sensible option to select.

You do have an option.

Far as I can tell you have a kernel and it's of some distribution of BSD. Nothing here really restricts directly to linux.

Except that most of the options simply don't apply. kernel.org is a Linux site, so the first two choices do not apply. FreeBSD is not a distribution in the sense used by the next five choices. It is not a "distro" in that it is not a project separate from kernel development (though it would be a "distro" in reference to KDE or other third party project). I haven't downgraded my kernel so the penultimate choice doesn't apply. And since I know what a kernel is (having read "Design and Implementation of 4.4BSD"), I don't have any options left!

If option two didn't have a reference to kernel.org, I would have chosen it.

if i am running freebsd with newest stable base (5.4-prerelease) - of course a kernel with altered setings - my choice would be:
-Latest updated distro Kernel with altered settings.
would it?

still extra options for bsd-kernels would have been nice...

Smileaf is right, the poll isn't restricted to Linux. Even Windows has a kernel (ntoskrnl.exe for those using 2000 and XP). In this case, the choice would probably be "original distro kernel", since Windows is screwed up enough as it is, I'm not going to take risks at altering the kernel!

In my case, I'm using Mandrake as it came from the installation CDs, and I don't think any programs I've installed would make changes to the kernel. (except maybe driverloader) I picked "original distro kernel" simply because I don't know any better! :-p

When nobody is looking, this sentence is in Spanish.

Except that you don't get WinNT isn't a distro and you don't get its kernel from kernel.org :-)

I use vanilla kernel 2.6.11 with nitro-source patchset applied. It rocks, best desktop experience ever. :)

I use 2.6.10-morph25 (http://morph-sources.sf.net) - a very nice patchset based on -ck. Will try 2.6.11-morph1 later.

BTW, I never used vanilla kernel, and the first thing I did installing a newer version of a distro was downloading the newest kernel and the least stable patchset :) Now I am running Gentoo - it has many kernels in portage (including, but not limited to, vanilla, ck, gentoo-sources).

It is not the size of the hammer that counts. It's how you wield it.
