 unwanted Mirroring

by kaerF on: Jan 15 2003

Hi,

I think a big part of traffic might consist of people (trying to) mirror(ing) all your content. I know that the creators of Pro-Linux.de added functions preventing this in their current content system. I haven't tried but I was told so when I met the webmaster at LinuxTag last year.
So you might as well think of techniques preventing such unwanted mirroring (even if it in the beginning only means banning windows-clients doing mirroring and wget - tho you can change what it sends as user agent with wget).

And stuff that the other guys said before, like resizing all the preview-screenshots to a certain size, maybe even changing them to a certain jpeg-quality.

But you thought of that before, mesa sure.

Hope you'll find a way to handle it.

Bye,
Sebastian

I agree with the most. I think, that the most content can be hosted externally (tripod or maybe themes.org?). I dont know, but i think that single content (one or two icons) should be putted together to one project. Maybe it is possible to sign up a themes.org project for user-created icons or something similar. Most of them are spread over the hole kde-look page, so if you lookin for icons (or some other content) you'll find thousands of one little icons or wallpapers or something related. I think, thats wasted bandwith.
I contributed some wallpapers and i agree with the anonymous post, that the most of the wallpapers should be placed externally in the web. If the most users doing this, Frank shouldn't have much work with orginizing the content.

I could mirror, I've got a faster connection than the DSL people are offering, and a fairly nice 2.4ghz/512mb/120gb/Linux/MySQL, and would be willing to mirror. Email me if interested - tytanic11@comcast.net

Hey there, my friend has a hosting company, called DynamoHosting (www.dynamohosting.net), you could probably negotiate a deal with him for a good cost...
