Now (in the future that is) I will be able to have *big* Icons.

Hope I could have aautohiding panel with only a Kicker button with size 128*128. Now, that would be kool.. -)

 Vertex Based

SVG = Vertex Based?

Wow, that must be insanely usefull for reducing the memory footprint. Excellent idea!

How does the filling work though? Does it support gradients and whatnot?

 not really

i dont see how it will save your actual memory footprint, as the vectors have to be rendered into a bitmap thats the same size as it would be if they were just bitmapped graphics. in theory, it should save some hard drive space, and it also means you can have your icons any size you want (also, people who make new icon sets dont have to make an icon of every size, although an image that looks good at 64x64 generally doesnt look so clear at 16x16). theyll most likely load slower than bitmapped icons also...

if i remember correctly, svg was originally designed to be transfered over the web (ie, using svg instead of png/gif/jpeg), so there should be plenty of docs around about how to open/write them, from which you can find out info about gradients, fill, etc..

 But...

Hmm, the SVG`s are converted to bitmaps and stored as so in memory?
I presumed they would be stored in some graph/geometrical structures, and rendered as bitmaps as and when neccessary. Obviouslly, even a complex vertex network is a heck of alot smaller than a 32x32 PNG file, and the difference would be even greater when the icons are animated, no?

As for load times, I guess that depends on the exact file sizes of the SVG files and efficiency of the algorithms involved. I dont know much about the format, but I can imagine the icons being very small in file size - 200 bytes max? Compared to the many Mb of PNG data which is loaded (not all at once) in my current KDE environment, those SVG`s would no doubt load quicker.

 vectors vs pixmaps

by stilborne on: Feb 19 2002

well, they need to be pixmaps at some point so you won't see any real memory savings. in fact, they may result in more memory being used since they have to be rendered into pixmaps.

as for speed increases, the png icons tend to be a few K in size. that really isn't enough of a difference from the SVG icons to be noticeable in terms of disk access time. and when you take into consideration that they need to be rendered before shown, the SVG icons will actually be slower.

the real benefit to SVG icons is that they can be scaled to arbitrarily large sizes, which means less work for icon designers (one file, multiple sizes) as well as makes room for the high resolution displays of the future.

I might have a look at the archive of kde-artist maillist though. Thanks.

... I can't share the files since I don't have them. I'll have a look at Conectiva when you release that nice version :)

In case you understand Spanish (I don't speak Portuguese):

Tranquilo everaldo, no puedo compartir ese fichero, puesto que no lo tengo. Esperaré a que distribuyan la versión de Conectiva para probarlo y tener en mi escritorio los iconos tan buenos que está creando.

Un saludo

uga
