 Redhat RPMs?

by anonymous on: Dec 19 2001

Of course, there are no rpm's for redhat (like always). Time to look out for another distro, because compiling is way too much trouwble...

Compiling kde is very long, but very easy.

I have compiled the cvs code many times. just folow this link :

http://women.kde.org/projects/coding/kde2+3.html

if you allready have kde2.2 working on your computer, you won't have any trouble.

get SuSE, SuSE has far the best KDE support ...

if you have a fast internet connection, you can get SuSE 7.3 here: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/7.3

instructions are here: http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/lmuelle_suselinux_internet.html

and if for some reason, SuSE is not what you want, get Mandrake ... and if you don't like Mandrake, then you should get Debian ...

 mmm.... apt-get

If you have a fat pipe to the net then once you try debian you will never use another distro. It takes a little more knowledge to install and a little more time to customize but once it is up you will never have to re-install again. Apt-get is SO nice. You can even upgrade your kernel. Just do apt-get update and apt-get upgrade every couple of days and you have the latest of every program.

 Why get suse?

by anonymous on: Dec 20 2001

Score 50%

Suse belongs to the set of newbie distrobutions (lead by mandrake, including redhat, suse and others) and its *unforgiveably* based on the terrible RPM system.

apt-get install task-x-window-system kde; echo "Im done here, dependencies resolved, downloads made, heck, if I specified -b compilation would be underway..."

 APT and SuSE

Yes, I agree that apt would be better than using rpms, you will only notice any difference if you got a fast and cheap connection. If you don't wanna download the binaries at home, then it doesn't make that much difference.

At least with KDE, I have not had any problems so far. I just get all the rpms from the ftp site, select them with YaST and chose install. Installed them by ftp too once... YaST, select them and install, that's it

 rpm distros

I dont think people should slag off rpm based distros.Compiling from source is not always easy for newbies, plus it can be very time consuming, so I find rpms very good and have assisted me to move from Windows to Linux coz I hate compiling from source.

 Mandrake 8.1 RPMs :)

I just have to say about Mandrake 8.1 and its package manager, rpmdrake.Quite simply, this thing is superb.

Easy to add FTP sites for it to check for security updates, bugfixes and updates. Then you just select the app you want and it goes off and gets it. It figures out the dependencies and sorts them all automatically. I've been using Linux distros from Mandrake, Red Hat and SuSE for almost four years now, and MDK 8.0 and the 8.1 betas were nice, but this is just incredible. I'm an old, hardened, jaded coder, but this really did make my day... I recommend everyone to give it a try.

To everyone who worked on rpmdrake, very well done... you did a great job :)

I second that. Being able to easily search for installed or installable packages too is a bonus.

I really dont mind compiling source ... But If I want to install something really quick... Rpms are the way to go... Additionally RPM Drake is a very good substitute for apt get ... ;)
