 I could mirror...

also a small part. I have adsl flat (768/128, not much, but maybe for avoiding the worst case szenario) and some harddisk-space to offer :-)

And if one could donate...

I feel, that I have to help kdelook!

Greetings,
Mona

that a "DSL-Mirror" makes any sense:

1.) An upload bandwidth of 128 K is a joke. You could server at most 5 users.

2.) How should the shared data be managed across all the single computers?

3.) Can you afford keeping your computer up and running 24/7 with a reliable uptime (99%)?

Mirroring is basically a great idea, but I think Frank should rather contact experienced mirrors, like some universities, gwdg.de, sunsite.dk and so on.

 P2P Network?

What about some kind of P2P Network to share the data. We would have to agree on one P2P Software.

My suggestion is to use edonkey for that. A Linux client is available and there is already a KIO-Slave for eDonkey links available. Using this KIO-Slave, someone could place simply an eDonkey link as download link and share the file with his client.

By using a P2P software, everybody is able to spent some harddisk space and it's convenient and easy to manage.

However I think of this just as a last resort, if you cannot find mirrors or another Sponsor.

 Hosting

I would be more than happy to assist you with the hosting problem.
My servers are capable of unlimited transfers per month, however to
reduce the strain on any one server, I would need you to divide the site
into a few seperate sections. For example, have the wallpapers section on
one server, the themes / styles on another, and so on. I think this migh help
decrease the overall bandwidth usage on the servers as well. I will need to
speak with some of my hosting partners about this, but I may be able to
help you keep this going. Drop me an email at:
joe@nutext.zapto.org and I will see what I can do to help.

As far as advertising goes, I think this is a great
idea. Banners that pay for each click, or pay commisions
would be the best. You might concider placing those there too.
Check with your provider to see if they will host you long enough
to get the ball rolling, and if they will not then get back to be and
I will see what I can do to get them to support you. Keep in mind that
money can buy anything (in the world of electionics, that is. Trust me on this...
I tried to pay my fiance to shut up for 30 minutes and the results were not so pleasant ;))

I'd like to donate. But I'm not going to set up a PayPal account just for that. Since I'm in Germany already now I'd expect there to be another (ie. cheaper) way to transfer money (ie. money transfer =P) but I can't find information for doing so anywhere.

PayPal is confusing. I've registered for KDE-Look after seeing that registratrion is "free" on www.paypal.com.

However paypal charged me an fee for $1.96. Does anybody know how it comes that a "free" account costs $1.96? Is this an anual fee or an one-time fee? I haven't found anything about this fee on paypal.com :-(

Hi,

This is to verify your CreditCard number, you will have an 4 diget number on your CC-Bill, enter this number in paypal (STATUS) to get verfied. After that you are able to send funds, you will get the 1.9$ refunded from PayPal.. so no costs.

 Wallpapers

What is consuming most of the bandwidth? I guess wallpapers. Although I think the wallpapers should stay if possible, you could close the wallpapers section until you find another solution.

 I guess you're right

What is taking most bandwidth is certainly the wallpaper section. And maybe screenshots. I would mourn the loss of the wallpaper section, but I would mourn the loss of the whole site even more.

I guess it will not be feasible to remove the wallpapers and merge them back in at a later time (given, that a new provider or host can be found, willing to take this kind of traffic) and that is a shame, but it would be a greater shame to lose a repository for all the icons, decorations, themes and styles.

If the wallpaper section were to stay, here are some propositions for reducing the bandwidth.

1.) Only uploads of previews should be allowed. The preview should be limited to something drastically lower than 750 KB. Maybe 100 KB, maybe 50. Maybe even less. A lossy jpg should be sufficient for just that: A preview.

2.) No upload for the whole wallpaper anymore. An external link should be sufficient. Anybody can get free webspace nowadays. The possibility to upload multiple hyperlinks for different resolutions would be nice. This way, the traffic will be shared evenly over the contributors, with kde-look posing as a central directory.

3.) The remaining problem are the past wallpapers. I think there are three ways to deal with this.

a) Leave them as they are, since most people have already seen and downloaded them. (But newbies with time and a flatrate could cause significant traffic).

b) Remove them, since most people have already seen and downloaded them. (This would surely save the most bandwidth, but it is the solution I would least like to see.)

c) Remove them and put a message in a prominent place which tells users to upload previews of their past wallpapers and link the actual files (as described in 1) and 2)).

I am deeply grateful for the platform of kde-look and I would love to see it stay as it is. But the amount of traffic should be more evenly distributed among the people who profit most of it: The contributors.

I suggest leaving the eyecandy sections (icons, themes, splashscreens, ...) on the kde-look server, since they seem more important and more kde-specific to me than wallpapers, which could find other platforms if need be.

Thought should be given to limit the preview sizes for those sections too. For new ones and for past ones. Maybe a period of several days or weeks should be given to the artists of those sections to change their previews to a reasonable size. After that a script might (ImageMagic can do this thing I think) reduce all untouched previews to something more convenient (maybe 320x240? maybe 640x480? A preview for three icons doesn't need to show the whole desktop in lossless png). The possibility to upload external screenshots might be a good idea as well.

I am aware of the fact, that all this would be quite time consuming. At least for the hand that feeds. Frank. But I think now is the time to give thought to the question how the weight of the load might be distributed to some more shoulders, so this would only be hard work for a short time.

Other opinions please.
