 Liquid

Personally I think liquid is great, there are certain aspects of keramik that i like, but I don't think it is the thing for me. The thing is Mosfet has to start being serious about working on KDE themes, because his disappearing acts are no good to us who love his work. I think a lot of us have to earn a living as well, but some of us devote some time to linux even though we dont get paid for it, it is a passion. As for Redhat 8, it sucks, it is really disgraceful the way that the have done the work of the KDE team and everyone who has contributed to KDE. Gnome is no good for me, why destroy KDE and make it look that ugly. Give my crystal and liquid anytime.

 obscure distros...

mmmmm.... I like CRUX.... CURX is like LFS in the way taht you choose what's on your comptuer. I tried LFS, I liked it... but i don't want to recompile Xfree every time there is a security release. Crux is the choice for me. http://crux.lugs.ch

 ... ???

What is the point? who's Mosfet? I know
what is KDE, and prefer to use it (_now_); used a
number of distros, but currently settled in
one.

There would, and will replacement for Mosfet,
and even KDE itself; the samething and same
disappointment must have occured for some who
prefered the old times when things don't even
look fitting together but merely able to co-exist

Liquid may be good and cool for some, but not
me personally, I think this "optionality"
is the real underlying philosophy under Open
Source, and it ran counter with business.
So I would applause the distro companies for
trying to keep the clash minimal.

I just clicked to the page; it contains mostly
rentings, not a worthy look.

 suggestions

The thing I like most about Linux is that you are not fettered to what some bunch of "marketing experts", most of which don't know the difference between a Sunfire and a C64, think proper for you but can put together your own system... there are some apps from the GNOME side which are better than their KDE counterparts, and vice versa; select what you like.
Most folks seemingly don't realize how much improvement is boosted by competition...
If you don't like RedHat, just get another distribution - I had Yellow Dog once (the PowerPC derivative of RH), and although those guys did a lot of hard work to get it adjusted to the queer Mac hardware, still it sucks... for example, nobody has ever bothered to upgrade their scripts to Python 2... I do lots of scripting with Python myself and had real trouble with that since nobody ever told me they were still using 1.5!
So if you want to hear my suggestions (I do not have the time to do much coding myself...):
- Documentation, documentation, documentation! This is vital for Linux. See SuSE's manuals or van Rossum's description of the Python internals for some really good documentation. If everyone would describe the clockworks of his (or her) software as extensively, it might be much easier for the casual user to customize things... I think Evolution is better than Kmail but it does not handle multiple accounts (yet) - and I do not want to spend hours on finding the proper point to do a hack on...
- If you really want do something for Linux, there are (IMHO) two real weaknesses: First, direct data exchange between programs is rudimentary... MacOS 1.0, twenty years ago, did better :-( ... if we could agree on some clipboard standard for both GNOME and KDE and make GIMP, for example, participate, everyone would benefit. Second, the "office suites" of both really need some improvement... the current versions of Kword and Abiword are both crap... have a look at OpenOffice to see what is feasible. (Personally, I use LaTeX even for letters but sometimes folks send you files... :-) )
- Okay, this is a site devoted to eyecandy... what is really getting on my nerves in this context is that many folks have just enough creativity to try to turn Linux into a Windoze or MacOS lookalike... have a look at Sun's Metalworks - which is just a demo for Java - and compare! These window control elements are what I would call intuitive... and they look great too. (Okay, you are free to dissent if you feel otherwise, this is a Linux forum!) There is an IceWM theme featuring Metalworks, but this is very rigid... I don't like the colours at all (after fifteen years of DNA work, you are conditioned to being alerted at the sight of blue and purple light... hence I prefer green :-) ) and would certainly like a native KDE theme, only I have not found one! Perhaps I'll use my Xmas holidays to implement it... we'll see...
