 NOoo!

by WinterWolf on: Jan 5 2003

KDE-LOOK.org is the best site for art I have ever found. I would hate if it went down. Maybe you can get SuSE, Mandrake or some other distribution to host your site in exchange for banner adds and a "Powered by SuSE Enterprise Server" or "Powered by Mandrake" graphic at the bottom of the page.

Try all of the KDE centric distributions, there has to be one who can afford it.

The community will also try to help you out.

I am just curious. What is the average banwidth/second that the site uses right now? I might be able to see about a hosting if it is not too outragous.

 About a T1

450 GB per month comes to 1.49 Mbps. Of course, I'm sure it's a lot higher than that at peek times.

I posted in the Mandrake Club forum asking Deno if he would explore the possibility of MandrakeSoft hosting the site. No promises, but I am hopeful.

 Pay Pal Button?

I don't know if it would bring in near enough cash, but if there were a paypal button (that maybe installed a cookie for no ads or something) that made it easy to donate some moneys, I know I'd drop a couple bucks in now and then. Is this not feasible?

 Bandwidth

 by mdfst13 on: Jan 6 2003

Working from the 450GB/month number, I calculate an average bandwidth as less than 200KB/second (but > 180KB/s).

Hope this helps,
Matt

P.S. I saw the note about MandrakeSoft above. I know that Kevin Carmony from Lindows.com also expressed interest in helping. Frank should have an email from him by now. Perhaps several of the KDE using organizations could band together and provide mirror sites or split content or whatever.

 PayPal button

I think you need to put a gentle reminder just above the "Download" button that the site need support and making a donation via PayPal would be apreciated.

But if you were to use mirrors I could offer some bandwidth.
Also, instead of linking to one downloadplace, the download might be done from several servers?
This way only the web pages needed to be hosted on you're machine giving much less bandwidth requirements!!??
If you get more offers of mirroring, pleace feel free to contact me and I'll try to help being one of the mirrors.
