I thought a lot about a way to redesign the websites to make it easier to understand and use. The plan is to make the website layout as light as possible so that the actual content is in the focus and more visible.

Another goal was to introduce a real navigation where you can see what kind of functionality the websites provides and you see where you are, at the moment.

The current design is not finished yet. This is in beta stage, at the moment. I would like to hear feedback from you.
What do you like? What don´t you like?

YES YES YES!!! All these opendesktop.org sites are such a great resource for the community, but it's obvious the interface wasn't designed for so much content and so many different sites. And all the "social" stuff seems kinda tacked on.

I think you should try and model yourself after some "Web 2.0" websites. I know it's a buzz word and some people hate all this AJAX stuff, but it can be really beneficial to end users. Something like Digg, but not, uhh, filled with crap.

I think Digg's a good example. The content's the focus, the categories are up the top but unobtrusive. And the links are out of the way down the bottom.

Also I think you should try to move the focus to opendesktop.org. Instead of having separate sites for different toolkits and desktop environments have one that aggregates them all. Then allow the user to filter the categories if they're really adverse to a particular toolkit. Keep the individual sites or course, maybe even replace them with a link back to opendesktop.org with a filter that relates to wherever the user is coming from.

I know you've already done something like that with opendesktop.org, but the original kde-look/kde-apps system just doesn't feel like it was meant to handle it.

I don't know, if it was me I'd consider completely completely replacing the content system. I know your system is custom built, and you've put a lot of work into it, but sometimes you get to a point where you've got to redesign the whole project. Maybe you should think about redesigning and rebuilding your content system (reusing as much code as possible of course), or look at building a custom extension to something like Drupal or Joomla (if it's possible).

Or maybe that's throwing the baby out with the bath water. Anyway, whatever you do kde-look, kde-apps and all the other will still be one of my favourite places on the web :)

indeed, when you search for an app and don't care about the toolkit (or you want Qt / KDE), you have to search on each site and aggregate the search results yourself.. I guess the most flexible approach would be to use tags/labels.

of course, there should still be separate feeds available, or customizable feeds.

I like it too ... but needs more polishing.


Personally I like previous design better, because it was more contrast (menu vs. content), but this one is also good.

Only orange advertising on blue page header is discusing. It focus eyes on it. Focus must be on content, not on menus and adverbs (I know they simply had to be there, until You won a Lottery).

Ok, I'm telling unimportant things here...

Hi Frank, great work so far with everything :) The only thing I find myself wishing your sites had (and let me know if they already have this and I've just missed it) is the option to get a newsfeed for a specific category. For example, it would be nice to have a newsfeed for all new plasmoid content - without having to also get all the other content as well.

Seems like more and more of the KDE-related websites are adopting a sort of KDE-style with rounded corners and some shadow. Like: http://planetkde.org/ and http://forum.kde.org/

This one is fine but you could probably easy syncronize by changing the 'topbar'.

After working the whole day at my Desk I dislike the white background. It's like someone is poke in my eye. A little shade of grey like before would be nice, or the possibility to have an alternate Design with 'profile-saving-options'.

I may be the minority in my opinion, but I don't like this brighter redesign; there's too much white (at least at the moment). You could totally pull off the brighter look if you down it down a bit
