I use KDE for the fact its very powerfull. I can a lot more thing I can with Gnome. Gnome is well like said, very simple. Nothing really advanced.

But kde does not support programming in C.
It's use less for c developers And Linux is one of the best example of what we can do with c.

What do you mean by that? Kate does a nice enough job with coding.
Anyway, Gnome still seems pretty nice, I'd put "average" users on it for exactly what Gnome's trying to do: Make things not as powerful, but usable by newbies.
(I'm on KDE right now though. Dropline decided to die.)

Uhhh, I really don't see how KDE has anything to do with you not being able to program in C. KDE sure wasn't written in Pascal or BASIC (if you're trying to say that KDE isn't written in C).

Okay, okay KDE is great, we do not need to discuss this (Yes, I'm using it too) But the comment by Linus is somehow strange. If I remember right, Linux is made for weak machines, too. And if you have not at least a Pentium II KDE is but a pain in the a**, if you know what I mean. In that case xfce or maybe Windowmaker would be a better choice. The Question, which X-Window enviroment you should use is, imho, the same as the question, which OS to use. The right answer is "The right one for the right task, besides that the one YOU like the most". It would be nonsense to recommend KDE to somebody, who is quite familiar with Gnome, as well as it would be nonsense to recommend Linux to my younger brother, for his only purpose in sitting in front of a screen, is to play the newest, fastest, etc. games.

So, let anyone who wants to use Gnome, for God's sake, use it, he (or she) does more for the popularity of Linux than any Windows user or than any little Hacker, sitting at home, don't caring at all,

P.S. Hope you did understand what I mean, my english is not that good.....

but who that owns less than a PIII could expect a modern fully modern desktop? I mean these kind of desktop enviroments priorities must be to stay current and have the functionallity you would expect today.

Sorry to say that, but you missed my point.

I'll give an example:

A friend of mine once got a job as administrator at a school. He has a lot of windoows expierience but not that much in linux, so he asked me, what he could do with some Computers from 486 to Pentium 100. (That's more than some Germans schools I know do have!) I recommended using Linux (of course). He watched me installing some Debian boxes, and said, that nothing with a textbased user interface could be used, for the pupils should learn with the boxes how to use a modern Operating System.

So far so good, I installed Windowmaker, and he was lucky. But if I would have installed KDE or even Gnome you could Imagine, how slow it would have been, if it would have been run at all. So my point is, that before you recommend something, nonetheless what, first take a look what is needed, and then make a recommendation. KDE is NOT the "I-fit-on-all-tasks" enviroment, that it (sometimes) claims to be, and whoever needs to decide, what to use should keep this in mind.

it has both icewm and kde and xfce,its optimised for old hardware and they say its the fastest non source distro on the planet:

Welcome to the world of progress. Saying that "Linux was made for weak machines" is a weak way of thinking. Programmers sure aren't writing new applications to take advantage of the capabilities of out-dated machines, and I'm not strictly talking about KDE programmers. I can honestly say that if it wasn't for KDE, I would have had much less luck getting Windows users to switch to Linux. Take those Pentium II systems and turn them into a firewall, then go buy a bargain-basement priced Dell system to install Kubuntu on and life is good.

You're right, linux isn't written for weak machines, but ALSO for weak machines. So again: it's not the point, if you are using KDE, Gnome or whatever, the point is what you do need, and what you do have. When I've read the comment of Linus further, he touches this subject, but all in all KDE is, imho, not worth a recommendation without compromises. I do also recommend KDE, if the parameters do fit, if not, I don't. I would never recommend something that doesn't fit to the surrounding. But this little differences are NOT reflected in Linus' way of talking, and that is the problem with the comment.

having gnome and kde is like having windows and mac on the same box, but instead of independant operating systems, kde and gnome both run on a common base of Linux.
it's really just too cool that left brained people and right brained people can come together on Linux.

yes. kde is better in many aspects (for me), but gnome so simple in use that every lamer can install and use LINUX like windows...its plus for linux, and only after that for gnome and kde

Neolith, does it seem to me, or at you the Russian accent? )

command line is coolest! :)
