does that mean that only new stuff will be shared or that the old stuff will also be shared?

 sharing problem

by surfg on: Jun 19 2004

I like the idea but i see a problem. I have some KDE-exclusive content that i uploaded without hearing of this, and i have been getting complaints in my mailbox and at the project pages. i think it is a good idea, but would greatly appreciate a control to choose what content to share and which not to.

windows on a mac? who the hell would want to do that?

all of my wallpapers are saved in progressive scan JPG files, but i have kde-sheer perfection, which has caused over 50 complaints to my inbox, asking me to remove it or submit it to kde-look.org, which was what i had originally done. It is just people who are ignorant about the sharing arrangement and do not realize the reason the content appeared.

 Terrible Idea!

This is called KDE Look, I come here looking for KDE stuff. I can handle a few "off topic" stuff in the wallpapers, but mixing kde and gnome stuff makes no sense at all.

Why not just splitting the wallpapers into categories, maybe KDE, Gnome *nix and Others, and just sharing the last two?

 Sharing

I also thinking that sharing ALL wallpapers does not make sense.

Imho it would be better to have two wallpaper sections:

Wallpapers

and

KDE Wallpapers

on KDE-Look and

Gnome Wallpapers

on GNome-Look.

That would be an excellent idea! So I won't have to see all those desktop-related entries, can find real eyecandy. :) By the way, IMHO XMMS-themes would fit quite good at kde-look.org, since that's my favourite audio-media-player.

Yes, quite some fine program. But I prefer a media player that is lean and easy to configure. amaroK is IMHO too hungry for resources.

 Great idea

I think this content sharing is great. Like others have pointed out, wallpaper doesn't care what desktop environment you run, and all the best content just focuses on looking good rather than advertising one desktop environment/OS or another. Maybe this will even encourage more people to submit art rather than just modified versions of somebody's logo.

I've been using kde-look for a while now even though I'm a Gnome user. This just lets me browse wallpapers and GTK themes at the same site now :)

Thanks to everyone who made kde-look and gnome-look possible!

 well...

Frank, let me be the first to say that I *really* appreciaite everything you've done with kde-look, kde-apps, and gnome-look - and I think everyone posting here does. I don't think anyone, including myself, means to sound ungrateful by any means.

However, I do agree that sharing ALL wallpapers is probably a bad idea. I'm honestly not sure about the best solution - I seem to lean towards having a general wallpapers section shared, and a kde or gnome wallpapers section specific to their respective sites. But I'd hate for too many people to have the experience of the submitter above where gnome or KDE users who are unaware of the content sharing start spamming the person with complaints.

Hmmm, it seems that your are right. I thought that wallpapers are compatible with KDE and Gnome.
But it seems that users aren´t open minded enough to handle a KDE or GNOME Logo on a GNOME or KDE desktop.
I will try to find a solution for this problem.

Cheers
Frank

Hi there Frank, you are right I think, in general it's a good idea to share content, wallpapers too, because there are many general wallpapers online specific to distro, not to Desktop environment.

But at least some people aren't aware of the content sharing, so they go to gnome-look.org to find gnome wallpapers, and they find several with KDE logos on it, so they think "what's up with those KDE-people posting their stuff on a gnome site?". Same with gnome wallpapers here on kde-look.

Another issue is that there are a lot more new submissions (viewing All but screenshots), so it's very hard to not overlook interesting stuff.

I too think a separation of gnome and kde specific wallpapers in 2 new categories would be helpful to bring back a little more order.

Besides that, you guys are doing a great job, especially in joining both groups of gnome and kde users and bringing them together here. Thanks for all xour efforts! :-)

Just use your illusion! :)
