Looking bad desktop.

Answer:try installing docky :)
Then install ubuntu-tweaks, and under window-manager select "use metacity's compositing feature"

I have got it to work great on a 10+ year-old computer, so this should work for you too :)

...the best thing you could do is look for a theme that you really like. you could also try out screenlets, and see if you like them at all.

GNOME is not the only window manager one can run on Ubuntu. I am a fan of KDE (you might consider trying it, too!), but enlightenment is very fast (much faster than GNOME) very beautiful, and looks different enough to turn heads and start conversations. Apologies if you were looking only for GNOME specific suggestions, but a quick Google image search for "enlightenment screenshots" finds amazing and gorgeous configurations that can be run on everything from cellphones to desktop computers. You might look into some of the other alternative window managers, too. :)
