Description:	Well, I think there are a lot of new themers who have trouble understanding gtkrc and think that the widget factory is some magical app that once you have that installed and you know how to use it theming becomes very easy. So this group I thought I'd start because I know there are a lot of experienced themers here with a lot of knowledge and a lot of new themers which have a lot of questions. This would be the place to discuss possible bugs and fixes and ideas and such. I think we need a place like this because: "No problem should ever have to be solved twice." Join if you have any knowledge in gtkrc or are interested in starting making themes and contributing to this site! Hello ! I've got some problems to create a gtkrc, because I've done my new theme with the Gnome-Color-Chooser. So the file is in .xml and it's duble-dutch for me. Can you help me or work and ameliore on my theme ?

I had posted a long time ago that I was interested in exactly that. Of course you deleted my post afer a few weeks.

Again, I have compiled a theme colour changer that I wish to discuss, this is due to the fact it is my very second ever thing I wrote/ compiled for the linux comunity. I am unfamiliar with some issues and kinda out of the themers loop so I am looking for comments on how to improve my works.

Later I will write them from scratch.

Please be kind enough to address me, I have perhaps a thousand users for my published works now and I wanna make some additions.

, really , my mistake, I didn't mean to!

To be honest with you, I have been using kde
for quite a while now so I haven't done any gnome
themeing since....

however if you are still interested in the menubar
to get the bold text I'd says something like this:
(I could be wrong since I don't have gnome installed
and don't have the time to compile right now)

style "panelbar"
{
font_name = "Bold"
}

class "PanelMenuBar*" style "panelbar"

I am not at all sure but you can try it out :)

I created this group a long time ago when I used gnome
and didn't know that kde was the choice for me...

I don't see any point in deleting it either since
there have been conversations here without
me also so....

Is not about that the group should be deleted if you are a KDE user (happy?) but the fact that the group creator has trade us... he, he, he btw seriously, I think that kde and gnome should work together to create the ultimate(?) Gnu/Linux UI. That's the point ;) cheers, krig (gnome happy user)

hehe yeah I know how it looks :D

well the thing I personally think sucks the most
is not the thing that there are gnome and kde....
but several toolkits... if there was only one toolkit
there wouldn't be any integration problems and
all apps would work just as good in any desktop
environment....

it also sucks because you get more dependencies
and the system gets bloat and it eats more memory....

but yeah, I c your point in working togheter as one :)

Thanks for getting back to me. I compiled the gtkrc-2.0 Panel colour changer now posted on softpediea and here. This was an original app writtin in part by kde. I gathered pieces from several sources and want to learn how to install it and what my user want to see me add to it to improve it. This is what I hope I can discuss with any one interested.
I am intrigued by your code. I will look into using it.

My hope is to expand my knowledge and therefore what I have to contribute to the Linux Community as a whole.

Please advise.

I'd try your app right away if I was still on gnome :)

The only advise I can give you right now is, experiment
with the code, and try different solutions, that is
how I learned gtkrc anyway :)

I will try to answer any questions you might have
but I don't know how much help I can be.

You see the main-menu applet, using the paw icon? You see the LITTLE arrow?

HOW THE HELL DO I GET RID OF IT?

I notice in Rob's themes as well as in the Leopardish theme that there is no arrow on the main-menu applet, but I have no idea what piece of code enables this.

OK, last question (for now, at least):

The icons in the notification tray? Is there a way to increase the spacing between each icon in the tray? If there is, how do I code this?

as far as I know, you'd have to
alter it in the tray source code :)

you can only alter the "style" of the
tray using gtkrc, not the tray it self.

so the only way to do it, is mail the
gnome theme for a feature request or
start hacking yourself :)

I'm glad my previous post helped you tho :)

you can do a lot of tricky stuff using
gtkrc, but you can't alter how apps
work, are you working on a own theme
or some btw?

I am recovering from two car crashes and Rob jumps over KDE? This is the worse time of my life!! I cannot live like this! Suicide is the only solution.

By the way, good to hear about you Rob. Good luck with KDE. I personally don't like "desktops" but just a few gnome apps anyway.

If you have some time take a look at "Dust Burnt" for gtk2, it's quite a good proposal on what most people considers the "ugly/childish" standard look of Ubuntu.

yeah, I jumped over to kde since I started missing
too much features I think a de and it's apps should have :)

I'm on kde-svn nowadays :) and I love it!

btw... I took your advice and installed gentoo (did
a stage 3 install) and boy it is great!

I can't find a dust burnt theme here but I think you

Thanks for asking. I am OK now, I think... Hopefully my body is too strong for yelling about it. Slowly finishing some jobs pendant to recall my icon work. It can be made much better but still stuck.

Quite glad you found Gentoo interesting, nowadays I turned to Source Mage, though still appreciate Gentoo as it is a little more "mature".

are really great!

Yeah I also checked on the source mage home-page
but I've been meaning to install gentoo for a long time
now and I really like the system tools it uses
(eselect , emerge/portage, genkernel) in love
with them actually!

Yeah that theme is the one theme that captured my
interest in a very long time :) it's really great, it's
kinda soft, and no extra bullshit but still very
modern and slick!
still, doesn't even come close to being as
beatiful as the themes I use on kde4 ;D

Hehehe Rob, regard the themes your using on kde4 and their beauty I have no doubts and sure they'r stunning, however you should remember your Slickness Black gtk theme and Vision emerald which I have modified in black..... here a screenshot:

Anyway I am on suse 11.0 kde4.... it looks great but different, Ubuntu seems to be easier for what i have seen till now but of course I just need to get more confidence with it. :))

I am a new themer and have just made my first theme, http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Playbill+GTK+and+Emerald+Themes?content=94076

One user posted a problem with transmission not displaying the progressbars at all. What would be the fix for this?

1-) Install transmission.
2-) Install the GTK+2 experience engine (and get whatever theme you want for it)
3-) Follow the instructions I leaved some posts back here (experience-gtk2-engine allows you to debug your theme).
4-) In another consideration I liked quite too much your theme (using it right now, and incredibly -for me- using the Red version instead of the Blue)

Perhaps this will be very useful for you regarding your theme:
a-) Start whatever GTK2/Gnome program you like (ie. evince) from any terminal and check out the complains (there are two errors actually)
b-) As a personal consideration, I think, you should rise a little the level of contrast for selected menu items (menu selection is not as noticeable as it would be...)
c-) In the same fashion of (b) above, try also to change the color of the progress bars (perhaps Red or Blue...) Probably the user tried to say there's not enough contrast in progress bars for him to see it :p

Hey i fixed those 2 errors, thank you very much for pointing that out =) I am now working on the colors of the menu selection and the progressbars, but the problem with transmission is not that they are to faint, it's that they actually don't show up. I use it as well and can't seem to figure out why... I've tried to find this experience gtk engine but i can't seem to find anywhere to download it form either. I'm on arch linux by the way it's not in the repo's or even aur, and i did a google search as well.

hello, great iniciative..

perhaps one of you can answer this:
i am looking already for so long to understand how i could switch off the ugly white shadows on insensitive text.
i found a half solution:
my theme is basically a pixmap theme,
switching on the murrine-engine and applying it to class "GtkWidget" helped a lot, most of the cases, the insensitive icons and text are grayed out. but some are not, like nautilus still has those ugly white-doted icons on the toolbar, ugky white shadow on ins. menu text and the right-mouse button-menu too....

while the other widgets are doing well... this will not look good on a pixmap-dark-theme..

any ideas?
do i need some special option?
how could i apply the murrine way on nautilus, etc?

for the ugly text , use mist or crux engine,
for the toolbar icons, you need something

another thing is:
i am trying to understand how to mix colors with an engine like murrine,
very simple and constant from dark gray to light gray, but what i get is the wierdest things, is like i cant control it... is there a good tutorial for muriine or engines in general?

But check out the murrina configurator: http://www.cimitan.com/murrine/configurator Hopefully it'll give you a better notion of the inner workings...

You can also try to compare this behavior with those default themes of: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Aurora+Gtk+Engine?content=56438
The settings are pretty neat.

Just don't abuse the color values (many times you get negative gammas as a consequence ...) Go step by step and all will be fine.

How do I change the window background color for inactive windows? I'd like active windows to have inactive windows to have a lighter color than active windows.
