Description:

Gwenview is a fast and easy to use image viewer/browser for KDE.

All common image formats are supported, such as PNG (including transparency), JPEG (including EXIF tags and lossless transformations), GIF (images as well as animations), XCF (Gimp image format), BMP, XPM and others.

Since 1.3.91, Gwenview can also view SVG images and play videos.

Standard features include slideshow, fullscreen view, image thumbnails, drag'n'drop, image zoom, full network transparency using the KIO framework, including basic file operations and browsing in compressed archives, non-blocking GUI with adjustable views.

Gwenview also provides image and directory KParts components for use e.g. in Konqueror.

Additional features, such as image renaming, comparing, converting, batch processing, HTML gallery and others are provided by the KIPI image framework.

Changelog:

# New features:

- Settings in the dialog to edit the thumbnail view details are now directly applied, no need to click "Apply" anymore.

- OSD can now display more image information: aperture, focal length, iso and exposure time. Patch by Carles Pina i Estany.

# Fixes:

- Bug 123516: After renaming, thumbnail panel is not updated

- Bug 138467: Crash in Exiv2 readMetadata when reading image saved in Photoshop

- Bug 131162: Autorotate images preference setting is forgotten

- Bug 132556: Gwenview asks to save the wrong file if the modified file is read-only

- Bug 111641: When several printing images in a row, "Keep Ratio" keeps ratio of first image

- Avoid crash when viewing extremely large images.

- Fix optimization compiler flags being disabled for scaling code.

- In fullscreen mode, make sure the cursor does not come back after moving to the next image. Patch by Carles Pina i Estany.

- Bug 130511: In the KParts, make Gwenview translations the active one, to avoid using KDELibs instead.

 broken CPU check

I've got P2-compartible CPU (e.g. MMX is the only extension), but configure set MMX2 & SSE for me. Seems ./configure is relying on the fact SSE (or whatever) instructions can be assembled white it's wiser to run the code & check if it has coredumped

Best regards, Mirya

 Preloading

Does gwenview already support image preloading like Kuickshow? If gwenview would compare in speed to Kuickshow I would certainly prefer it for image viewing.

But anyway, good work and I wish all the best.

I have some patches that implement basic image preloading. Not quite as good as I want it to be, but it should be more than good enough for things like slideshow. It will go to CVS soon. That's only pre-loading though ... it'll need one more weekend when I'll get bored enough to implement also pre-rendering.

As for the speed, here Gwenview seems about as fast as Kuickshow (hard to tell though, too fast machine). Maybe you should tell your Qt packager to include qt-copy patches #0005 and #0007. E.g. SUSE includes them and they significantly improve drawing of large images.

Wow, that would be great! As to the Qt: I am using quite recent Debian unstable. On a 1.7Mhz machine I can watch how 1MB JPG image gets rendered by gwenview gradually from top to the bottom in about 1 second.

By contrast, in Kuickshow the image displayes IMMEDIATELLY and the same applies to operations like rotation (works fast even on slower machines).

These two apps run on the same Qt, so they must somehow differ in the rendering method. Wouldn't it be possible to just adopt the method from the Kuickshow source code?

Well, if I'm not mistaken Debian is quite conservative, so I doubt the patches are included, although I may be wrong. They don't matter for Kuickshow because it uses Imlib for rendering. I'm not sure if using Imlib in Gwenview would make any noticeably difference compared to Qt with the patches.

 slow

I tried to view an image with dimensions about 4096x4096, and tried to scale it few times - gwenview scaled it very slow, even without antialiasing ...

I have an experimental patch that should improve this.
Until an improved version is available, you can try at least check and possibly adjust your image smoothing options to use delayed and fast smoothing.

 differences?

What are the differences between gwenview and digikam?

Is there some comparison about which does what?

The two applications have not been designed to serve the same purpose: Digikam is geared toward handling digital photographs, while Gwenview is a more generic image viewer, which can be used a standalone application or embedded in Konqueror.
Gwenview browses the file system while Digikam is more "higher level" and categorizes images using a database.
