Description:

Wally is a Qt4 wallpaper changer, using multiple sources like files, folders, FTP remote folders, Flickr, Yahoo!, Panoramio, Ipernity, Photobucket, Buzznet, Picasa, Smugmug, Google, Vladstudio and deviantART images. It runs under Linux, Win32, MacOSX and OS/2, and it's available in many languages.

Supported Window Managers:
- Win32
- MacOSX (using OSA scripts)
- KDE3
- KDE4 (using WallyPlugin)
- Gnome
- GnomeShell
- XFCE4
- Fluxbox
- Blackbox
- FVWM (unstable)
- WindowMaker

If you are upgrading KDE4 to 4.4, you must rebuild from sources, cause WallyPlugin can crash Plasma. DEB files are available for Lucid.

NOTE FOR KUBUNTU!!!!
If you're upgrading to 10.04 Lucid, KDE4 will crash at boot. To recover your system, just do the following steps:

- Press Alt-F2, type "konsole"
- At prompt, type "sudo rm /usr/lib/kde4/plasma_wallpaper_wallyplugin.so"
- Restart your system.
- KDE4 should start normally. Please remove Wally, and download the specific package for Lucid available below.

Note for Ubuntu users: if you're using KDE4, please use KDE4 ONLY packages!!!

Note for Mac OSX Snow Leopard:
You must disable "Change Picture" feature, that's in System preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Change picture.

Note for Windows 2000/XP: Active desktop must be disabled! Right-click on desktop -> Properties -> Customize desktop -> Web -> Uncheck all items you find there

 Transition

Would it be possible to add transitions for KDE4 between the changes? I would like to have a fading transition which would last for an hour, something like Fedora's infinity for Gnome (only). There are 24 backgrounds and they fading over themselves all the day and it's really cool. I guess it's just an alpha channel manipulation, which is updated like every minute - subtract 1/60 from the current and add 1/60 to the next picture...

Well, good idea :)

I don't know the application you suggested, but I understood what you mean, and I think that it can be done with Files/Folders module.

I cannot promise when it will be available, a lot of TODOs have to be solved first, but I've just appended your request ... cross your fingers :)

Awesome!

I could help with that, but I would need your help with helping you, so in the end it may be more time consuming for you than if you would do it alone :D

Well I have some experience with Qt, I just don't know how this app works and how you imagine those transitions to be made, so you would need to help me understand that and than I could start working on it ;)

 ppa and wish list

Great app, i just did a jaunty .deb for both wally and wally plasmoid, should be in my PPA tomorrow (im gonna warn as soon as i make it available).

now for wishlist:

1 - a reload option in the wally menu, since im behind a proxy at work, sometimes the proxy crashes and wally gets stuck.. i know i could do a next photo, but a reload would be great..

2 - is there any way to activate wallyplugin for kde4 without restarting plasma? i have 4 activities (kinda virtual desktops) and if i add wallyplugin i have to kill plasma AND wally in order for the picture to show up the first time).

3 - the ability to see preview/thumbnail of the next photo would be great.

4 - finally, maybe you could integrate this with the kde4 screen saver since it allows plasmoids also, so i could leave it displaying pictures when im away.

anyway, great app :) a fan already.

one more thing, an option to enable a default background image (local) when the internet connection is down, so it doesnt stay with a black background.

Thank so much for your help in deb packages, I was trying to do them with a friend of mine, without success :(

Let me reply to your requests:

1 - why not? :) I put it in TODO list.

2 - at the moment, no. And, AFAIK, there's no way to make Plasma aware of a new wallpaper plugin without a restart.

3 - It can be implemented, but I'll put it later in TODO list, cause this request will change a bit the structure of Wally's engine.

4 - Well, I don't know. WallyPlugin is not a plasmoid, is a plasma wallpaper plugin, a technology introduced later (>= 4.2) by KDE guys, and it seems to me completely detached from anything else. I'll investigate about that, but I cannot promise you anything.

> anyway, great app :) a fan already.

Wow, you're the first :)

Well, this is a known bug that I'm trying to solve. I save in KDE config system the last image filename, but I cannot understand why it isn't loaded later ... :( ... stay tuned, I'll find out why, soon or later :)

Tony.

Well, I cannot understand your error. This method belongs to QLocalServer, according to documentation:

bool QLocalServer::removeServer ( const QString & name )

What version of Qt4 are you using?

That's the reason.

For WallyPlugin, you must use Qt 4.5. Well, latest KDE4 should supply at least a release candidate of Qt 4.5, it seems strange that you don't have it ...

KDE does not supply QT.
I could download QT from Trolltech and install it from source or the binary package, but there is a great chance to screw up my system.
And it is to much work just to test your app, even if it sounds great.

In 9 days there will be the first RC of Ubuntu Jaunty, which provides QT 4.5. I think it's better for me just to wait this time and try it then.

Thanks for your help!!

 Wally Plugin

Awesome app! Thank you for all your hard work :)

I noticed that the debs don't actually contain the wallyplugin :(

And then when I went to compile wally itself from the source, it took me a while to realise that the wallyplugin had to be compiled separately using cmake, which isn't mentioned in the readme.

I would also perhaps add to the readme that wally itself launches minimised in the system tray. It confused me after seeing the splash disappear as to what I should do next! And it also took me a while to figure out that the wallyplugin appears as an option under "Type" in Folder View Settings.

Sorry and one more little thing is that the wallpaper isn't automatically changing when a new one is downloaded, I have to go into Folder View Settings and re-Apply the wallyplugin.

But these are all just little niggles in an otherwise superb app. There are sooooooo many options to play with, plus you keep a well organised history of all the previous images. It's awesome, really awesome what you've done here :)

Thanks again,
tom :)

Yeah, I'm working on it. Next version is on the road, I moved all compilation to CMake, so it'll be easier to create a full deb. At least, I hope so :P

You're right, it's slightly mentioned. I'll be more verbose on next release.

Well, not exactly. First of all, you need to restart Plasma to make WallyPlugin fully working, after installation. Next, WallyPlugin has a small delay (it can require up to 10 sec.) in changing photo. Anyway, I'll explain it in detail in README.

Well, I spent so much time trying to implement it at best, and it's just a work in progress! :) Thanks so much to you, and NICE WALLYING!

Well, after a reboot (probably just a restart of plasma-desktop would have done it, like you said), it's all working perfectly.

Wow! I'm so happy. My desktop has access to all the the finest images on the internet and I don't have to click any buttons, resize or crop any images. Every hour (or every minute if I want) I get to have a new image related to a keyword(s) of my choosing.

Woohoo :)

Glad to read that :)

I hope that in KDE 4.3 wallpaper technology will be better. I really don't like their current implementation.

I mean, I can understand that the KDE3 dcop method didn't suit so well with Plasma, but their solution is not so "extensible".

Let's wait and hope ... in the meanwhile, Wally 2.1.1 is on the way :)

 Freezings

Hello!

I was using this plugin for several weeks with the new release of Kubuntu (10.04) and I have experimented that the OS freezes radomly and frequently. After disable it everything works fine. No freezings anymore.

I don't have further information about why that happened but I think it was because of this app.

I am using the version 2.3.2.

Anybody else has found this kind of issues?

My bad... Freezings were caused by the temperature raising. Before changing the wallpaper the app uses a lot of CPU and sometimes the temperature was too much. It is running on a laptop...
It's a great app. It changes wallpapers smoothly (not like the KDE plugin).
Keep on with your work!!!
