!!! KWireless renamed to KWlanInfo !!!
A renaming of kwireless was necessary to avoid an name conflict with kdenetwork3-kwireless.

KWlanInfo provides some information about wlan interfaces.

It's a kicker applet and so you must start it with a right click on a empty space in the kicker panel and then add it. At time it only works proper, if the wlan interface is set to "managed" mode (Access point).

Meanwhile it's tested with many wlan cards and distributions, but some wlan drivers do not set wlan statistics proper and so you get wrong data displayed.

Size of kwlaninfo now configurable. You can choose following modes (preferences dialog):
normal: ratio height:width = 1:2
condensed: ratio height:width = 1:1

You can now choose when info bar shall be visible. Following modes are availible (preferences dialog):
Mouseover: info bar will be visible if you move mouse pointer over kwlaninfo
Double Click: info bar is visible on a double click on kwlaninfo
(in both modes info bar is hidden if mouse pointer leaves kwlaninfo)

infobar shows graphical signal strength too

bar text will be removed if it's to big for the view

type selection in preferences dialog removed

KWlanInfo applet still runs even of missing or removing wlan card.
In this case it displays an error and in a tooltip (mouse over kwlaninfo applet) it shows an error message.
If card will be inserted it shows the normal bar view again.

 German umlauts?

There seems to be a problem with German "umlauts".
Instead of "Qualität" (Quality), "Qualit??t" is displayed in the applett.
In the popup, there are two squares insted of one "ä".

Maybe it's the same bug, which caused licq to display umlauts incorrect?

Look here for a patch which helped to get this problem solved for licq.

This is not a bug. I've edited the german po file with wrong encoding. Sorry, I'll put the correct mo file to kwlaninfo's home next days.

Please tell me the location of "wireless.h" on your system (normally it should be in /usr/include). May be it's in /usr/include/linux, in this case make a link in /usr/include. I also need your Linux distro and kernel version.

Just change in ../kwlaninfo-0.9.0b/src/kwlaninfo.h this line:
#include <wireless.h> to #include <linux/wireless.h>
so you don't have to change the location or make a link to this file.
Please report also on success.

Furthermore, there is something called 'kifi' in kdenonbeta which seems to do what this tool and the other do.

I've not tried any of them, but 3 separate apps with 1 already being in a position to transition to the a real kde module (kdenonbeta -> kdenetwork) seems a bit over whelming.

I made the changes and it compiles now. However, it doesn't give the correct readings for my PrismGT card. It takes one reading (which is usually wrong) and then doesn't update again when it is set to update every second. For the last 5 min it has shown my signal as 54 dbm, my noise as 52 dbm, and my quality at 95%. This can't be right, especially when iwconfig gives different numbers. Thanks for the help.

That's my iwconfig (I hid my encryption key). At the time I took that the applet showed 0 in all three bars. It also did not show my essid. My KDE is 3.2.3. QT is 3.3.2. I'm running Gentoo x86_64 with a 2.6.7 kernel. My wireless card is from Compex (PrismGT chipset) and I'm using the prism54 drivers compiled into the kernel and the latest firmware for the card.
