Description:

LyX is a document processor that encourages an approach to writing based on the structure of your documents, not their appearance.

LyX is for people that write and want their writing to look great, right out of the box. No more endless tinkering with formatting details, 'finger painting' font attributes or fuzzing around with page boundaries. You just write. In the background, Prof. Knuth's legendary TeX typesetting engine makes you look good.

On screen, LyX looks like any word processor; its printed output -- or richly cross-referenced PDF, just as readily produced -- looks like nothing else. Gone are the days of industrially bland .docs, all looking similarly not-quite-right, yet coming out unpredictably different on different printer drivers. Gone are the crashes 'eating' your dissertation the evening before going to press.

LyX is stable and fully featured. It is a multi-platform, fully internationalized application running natively on Unix/Linux and the Macintosh and modern Windows platforms.

NOTE: Please use the project's mailing lists and tracker for bug reports and feedback.

Ark Linux packages have been updated to 1.4.2 -- Ark Linux users simply apt-get install lyx

Others in need of RPMs may want to try

 LyX Site status

1.4.3 is not currently listed. The Changelog hasn't been updated to include 1.4.3.

Knowing that LyX 1.5 under development is targeted with Qt4 I does LyX 1.4.3 actually target Qt2 and not Qt3 frameworks to build against?

It certainly builds against Qt3 (which is recommended), but in 1.4, compatibility back to Qt2 is kept (this is because there is no official free Qt3 version for windows).

In LyX 1.5, Qt2 support will be dropped, because Qt4 is supported.

I love LyX as a writing environment. My only complaint is that the Save/OpenFile dialogs look absolutely out of place, regardless of whether you're running KDE or GNOME. In fact, they look like they're designed to match the Windows dialogs instead...

 sign counter

by ficus on: Jul 31 2007

Is there anywhere in Lyx it is possible to keep track of all the signs (incl. spaces) in the document? I need this for writing my university papers where they require info on exact sign amounts. If this hasn't been implemented, would it be hard to include in the next version?

Character count isn't implemented yet, only word count. It isn't hard to implement, but nobody volunteered until now.
