 DVB-record error!

 by piranha2001 on: Jun 27 2005

I just wanted to say, that I liked Kaffeine very much, but in the last two weeks I got a bit angry.
Three DVD-records I started stopped without any notification. Kaffeine did not crash or anything, it just stopped...
So in my opinion the advertised harddisk-recording function is absolutely useless! :-(
(My system: Gentoo, Kernel 2.6.11)

Same here. Using Ubuntu 6.06, dvb-c budget card and Kaffeine from Ubuntus repositories (0.7.1) Hope it will be fixed!

You know, Kaffeine is a wonderful player which has the most features compared to other media player. I wish to thank you for working on Kaffine and making it one of the best media player which Unix and GNU/Linux deserves.

Please make it the media player for KDE 4 ;)

I hope the konqueror crash is fixed with kaffeine embedded in konqueror (khtml .ram file playback)!

 bugs fixed?

The bug which prevented Kaffeine from playing files embedded in Konqueror was a killer, which made me use another media player. And there were a lot of other extremely annoying bugs.

Don't get me wrong, Kaffeine is nice, but I hope the bugs are fixed this release. I don't see any information on fixed bugs in the changelog?

If you're a talking about the crash after leaving the embedded player: Thats a problem with some x-server versions and can not be fixed.
And for all the other extremely annoying bugs: Please go ahead and fill out a bug report on the sf.net bugtracker.

You say that it's a problem with some xserver versions, but why is it possible that KMPlayer can run embedded in Konqueror without crashing?

Maybe I exaggerated a bit about the other "extremely annoying bugs". I can remember the 100% CPU usage bug on Kubuntu, but that was the Kubuntu package's fault. Besides that, I posted a bug report about the embedded playing in Konqueror crash, but I got no reply, so I wonder if you guys check the bug reports?

BTW, I read this on the Kaffeine development mailing list: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=7700699&forum_id=38669
When do you expect to move the Kaffeine project to the KDE project infrastructure? I hope it happens soon, more collaboration with the KDE project would be a great idea. IMO KDE should have Kaffeine as the standard video player, just like GNOME already has Totem as the default video player.

KMplayer runs a xine instance in another process then blits the image to the KApplication. This is less efficient, but at least avoids the crash. For Codeine I fixed the same bug by removing the call to XInitThreads for the KPart. This however solves the problem by creating another crash bug I believe. But it's a rare freeze bug instead or something. Jurgen knows more on this subject I reckon, and I hope he relies to this post.

Well, its simple: xine-lib is not developed thread-save, therefore it needs a XInitThreads() as first call in the application. Konqueror doesn't call it and may crash with an embedded xine-lib part.

Second (not so simple) problem: With some xfree/x.org versions QT programs don't start if XInitThreads() was called before a QApplication is created. In this case you should call XInitThreads() before initializing xine-lib instead (that's what the --with-xinit-workaround configure flag does) or the app will freeze.

"blits the image to the KApplication"

what do you mean by that as you give this as reason why it's less efficient?

KMPlayer creates a X-Window, passes this WId to the backend player that Xine (or mplayer) uses as output window. AFAIK there is nothing inefficient about this displaying video (no blitting at all).
What of course is less efficient is that a second process is created and that events from users or the Xine-lib causes interprocess communications. But this is only a small amount and goes much faster than that the user would notice.

Notice that we do the same for the nsplugin, which also runs the nspluginviewer as separate application for no other reason than stability.

Apologies, I glanced over the KMPlayer xine code once and saw some stuff that looked like bits, but I was apparently wrong. And it only would have been a little less efficient to blit anyway. Certainly, it's far better to not crash, which is what Kaffeine/Codeine do!

but I never got a reply on that bug report :(
