Description:

New idea for plasma-toolbar. It is mixed version of Plasma and Mac OS X Dock.

Idea is that minimisized windows gets only an icon to toolbar, while running applications gots icon with text. It could be swapped round too, so the windows what you see, are only as icons but windows what you have hided to panel, gets text there and bigger button so you can open them more easily.

Idea is panel would work together with KWin effect "Expose" plugin. You do not anymore switch between windows by pressing them on panel, but with your mouse or alt+Tab combination as #1 function.

You could re-arrage the order of these panels and lock-in them there for permament usage, more like the Dock.

You could include menubuttons and others as well (now here is KickOff as separeted) and they would get own gray icon there. The panel functions would allow resizing (up/down/sides) how windows/applications are functionin (running, minisized, other desktop, notifieng user etc).

Idea is to get rid of the systray and bring them to panel as well as complete icons or then in own format so all systray icons are groupped someway.

This was done 2008-11-15, if you have suggestion how to make this better, please tell it on the comment.

Should I change colors, the panel size? Ideas to make it better?

Only as an option.

Also, I don't like this ugly panel on your screenshot, but it's your desktop.

What makes the panel (mockup) so ugly, the color, size or idea?

In my opinion the panel is to big and it have too sharp transition between colors.
Perhaps You should change the wallpaper (maybe try sth more subtle) but it's just me...

The idea itself is brilliant and it will be great to see it as a part of KDE.

It should at least support tiny panels somehow for people that like more classic taskbars or use netbooks.

i guess the panel would be resizeable and fit into your plasma theme.. so the optical impression should not be relevant for the evaluation of this idea..

btw. i like the mokup and the idea!

 one proposal for this

Thank you for reference.

I like the mockup, but I would introduce a little change to this idea, perhaps as an option. For open application that has only one window open I would mark it as it is usually marked in docks or other icon task lists with a frame or something just to differentiate the icon and mark it as active. For applications that has more then one window open I would do it as it is on the mockup with a small little difference, just pointing with mouse on an icon would show the text of open windows so that clicking wouldn't be necessary. Clicking would just maximize the window that was clicked. But I like the idea of big icons and text for apps that has more then one window open. I prefer this solution to large preview window or just small icons with text as it is on dafault, classic task list.
But that's only my preference. Don't take it as criticism. Now I have a classic task list with active windows of running applications and the ones that I don't use currently I minimize to tray with Alltray. This way I have only active windows on panel task list and easy and quick access to other running apps but they don't disturb me. I wish I had a taskbar that would work similarly.
