This is a design concept for GnoMenu2

No Vista Like Buttons

No words, use of universal Icons instead

The Icons from top to bottom are:

Lock
Shutdown
Logout

The idea is to return to convenient menu actions without using the Vista graphics. While adding more accessed options and removing lesser used options.

This is only a layout and design concept. Other layouts are possible.

This layout can also be made in GnoMenu 1 series making it semi-backwards compatible.

Please post comments and productive criticisms. Don't just simply say its bad or good. GnoMenu 2 will start development at the end of January or Early February right after GnoMenu 1.7 is released. We need feedback to create a useful and pleasing default menu layout.

I'm digging it. I kinda edited the menu options on gnomenu1 myself to show the same options here, but you made it even better, making them sport icons instead of text links. Also, I think the gnomenu team is planning on making it custom-theme aware, I suppose? That would be great, so as not to limit the gnomenu use to a small number of themes available here.

We have already made GnoMenu system color aware and gnome menu compliant. Its being discussed to have GnoMenu use the system Icon theme instead of having its own set. (That is my preference anyway)

The GnoMenu 2 plan is to allow for many different and unique menu designs but for the default we want to keep familiararity and at same time remove the Vista look so this concept is more of a hybrid design. Layout somewhat Vista-ish but nothing else is Vista like. I didn't want to lose the convenience that came with the GnoMenu designs from the orignal Gnome Menu Vista by Chris and still follow Helder's goal to remove the Vista look from the default menu.

It isn't about it being free. Rather, its about the freedom it brings.

But isn't GnoMenu already using the system icon? I mean, gnomenu sports the icons that I choose for the system, with no further tweaking involved. The only thing that I would like is for GnoMenu to adapt the current theme's color scheme, which I haven't seen it do yet.

Anyway, nice plans. Looking forward to a brighter concept for GnoMenu.

GnoMenu 1.7 can use system colors or it can utilize theme colors set be the menu theme designer. As far as the Icons go, GnoMenu has always used the system theme Icons in the menu panel, however the Vista style menus require an Icon theme for display of the extra features. When we discuss the use of system Icons over theme Icons that is what we are referring to.

BTW if you pull the trunk source and compile it you'll see GnoMenu is indeed system color aware now.

Hey guys. I appreciate the work. It looks nice and it works well but I am going to provide my suggestions / preferences just so you have some valid user input.

Don't lose the vista theme. If you don't want it to be the default then that is fine but many people do like it.

Using the gnome theme icons is the _PROPER_ way to decide it. I am sure you guys can make some great icons but on top of it limiting the end users choice, it will additionally be out of sync with the rest of the desktop.

Ok, thats the only two suggestions I have. Aside from that it is nice work and I love using it and I am hoping that version 2 will fix the broken icon issue that seems to be common with Ubuntu 8.04/8.10 (x64 for me).

hmm... I've thought about making just icons instead of words for the menu that goes with my "Linux Glass" buttons I'm getting ready to release this week. Too bad you guys are thinking the same as me lol.

Anyway, it would be difficult to steer away fron a vista menu because it's pretty comfortable by now and easy. But I think i may have a few designs I could throw around that would be pretty comfortable for people. I don't exactly want to give them away to everyone as i would like to create them. But if Interested I could probably give some basic mockups.

Anyway I do like your thinking. I say don't give up on the vista menu quite yet but go ahead and create the one your thinking about making and use it for default.

P.S. Is there a way for me to add a "computer" menu to the main menu area instead of opening in a new window and is there a way to stick the first two internet options to the top? yes or no answers will help(i'll do the research on my own as it's for testing anyhow).

The Vista Menu look will always be an option and available but we also want to make GnoMenu do more than be a Vista look alike.

I'm still heavy into blueprinting it out and haven't even posted it yet for approval but the main goal is to open GnoMenu to many options to allow menu theme creators to become extremely creative. Multiple panes, tabs and animation effects are just a few of the things we are looking to do. It isn't going to happen over night but there are a lot of features the whole team would like to add but the biggest thing right now is to first port over the whole kit and kaboodle to Python 3.

Yes it is possible now [I even think I said that :-)] However it also requires a bit more skill and time I don't have at this moment. Supporting a huge group of wireless network users right now and that is eating at both my sanity and time. Plus trying to right up a blueprint for GnoMenu 2.

Besides I was looking for feedback on the design and concept at the moment.

The final thing is if I do make it for the GnoMenu 1 series it will stay have to be redone for GnoMenu 2. What I'm looking for is ideas and improvement for a GnoMenu 2 default theme.

This is more of a question and unfortunately I haven't found the answer to this one myself yet. Gnomenu 2 on my home desktop which is a fresh ubuntu 8.10 x86_64 bit install has the panel button extending past the task bar similar to vista where it covers part of the desktop/

Gnomenu 2 on my office workstation which was an upgrade from ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10 x86_64 has the icon cut off at the top of the task bar and does not extend onto part of the desktop. The icon itself seems to be truncated and this appears on all icons that are supposed to extend.

Does anyone know how this can be fixed?
