Description:

That's a mockup of a Media Player, with database capabilities, for KDE4. I was thinking about combining all the best features found on several media players in market [Amarok, Windows Media Player, iTunes, Songbird, Totem, etc (offline/online audio/video player - youtube player, etc)], into one and single media player.
What say you?

Changelog:

Update #1
I've added the "Collection" tab mockup and the media informations for movies.

Update #2
I've added the "Devices" tab mockup.

This mockup is just awesome!

I think the first thing to implement should be the Kwin + window background theme, it's really breathtaking!

Have you already joined the Oxygen team?

Take a look at the ML

I've started a new thread in the Amarok ML about these mockups and they seem to be a good ground of discussion!

Please join and share your ideas!

The KWin theme is default Oxygen theme and I believe that with the "Background" you mean the buttons, panels and everything else, correct if I am wrong, exist too. It Oxygen and Amarok2 has little different ways (as always) mixed with it. More like used features further what possibilities allows already.

The Mockup has one unique feature and it is the tablist top of the video screen. Where is the "Now playing" and "Media information" buttons. Those should follow the KDE style so when user use other style, it gets changed too and does not so on become a different kind UI for rest of the Desktop.

Well, though this mockup is partly inspired to amarok it is mostly about a "Multimedia Player" (it also plays videos).

When I talked about "windows background" I was referring to the nice Kwin decorator and the nice gradient that starts in the decorator and continues in the background of the window. I don't know the technical terms of the Oxygen / Ozone theme and where the several pieces of a theme are implemented....

Mmm... maybe I got what you intended: the theme for KWin and the rest is the one that's actually in use?

Well I must say that I get much less contrast than these images... Could it be that I have some bad color regulation? Or has it changed in KDE 4.2?

I just love the black parts of the GUI (columns headers and so on...). This looks beautiful and modern... I would be great if Oxygen gets sometings like that :)

 Your mock is nice BUT...

Hi..

I like your mock =)
It looks 100 times better then current amarok which has usability = 0.

BUT
I can almost guarantee that this will never happen...
Amarok developers are quite "strange" people... It's their way or the highway.
Hey if they were not then amarok 2 would not bad as it does today. =/

It's really sad thing to say that this will never happen but that the reallity..

Anyhow nice idea.. I support it!

*sigh*

I am sorry, but that is just plain trolling.

Now while I might be "quite a strange person" and I am indeed one of the Amarok developers, the issue from our perspective has nothing to do with resiting changes like these.

The real issue, that remarkably, very few people seem to actually grasp, is that there is a hell of a lot of work (especially for the artist) in between a nice mockup like this, and actually getting Amarok looking anything like it.

So while we get really nice mockups from time to time that we would love to implement, none of the artists so far has been willing to stick with us to do the actual hard, boring and repetitive work required to actually make it happen.

So please, if all you have to say is uninformed bile like this, please don't say anything at all!

I have a mockup for amarok2
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/Amarok2+Look+and+Feel?content=93854

KDE4 Media Player Mockups are not about amarok2, but for a new multimedia player (amarok2 fork maybe) for KDE4.

Who says that Amarok won't evolve into a media player capable of video in the future? They have changed many things already...

I could easily see Amarok incorporating these great mockup ideas (with the help of yourself, the talented artist) and becoming everything Amarok and Kaffeine were and more as a one-media-app-to-kill-them-all!!

But they could do with your help, and from what I hear they certainly want it!

Trolling it most certainly is. I _have_ gotten the feeling before that the amarok devs didn't take suggestions very well, but it seems like the majority of you were busy developing amarok2, and the comments I've seen since that has released have given me hope that you will take our *suggestions* in mind. Of course, many have much to say, but little to contribute. One of the devs on the Arch Linux forums has a sig something like "the idea box only accepts patches"!

I always feel somewhat bad, as my programming skills are fairly limited to web programming, and thus not very useful in most projects I have interest in. So, please don't be disheartened by the few who make comments such as the OP; not everyone hates the code you've spent countless tears on.

 Kaffeine?

by karper on: Dec 11 2008

This is perfect for Kaffeine! Amarok already has chosen a look and at best changes now are going to be evolutionary rather than revolutionary.

But there is still time for Kaffeine. Haven't heard a peep from those folks on the planets. If the Kaffeine UI looked anything like this, it'd be a killer media player and dragon player can go back to being a preview program...

I assume you're Nikolaj. I posted a reply to your blog explaining what I meant to say in greater detail. I'm afraid I got picked on for not being clearer in what I meant to say. I'm sincerely sorry for the confusion! As I said there, stick to your guns. Everything will turn out fine. For what it's worth, I support you. :)
